Paddle Tuition

Want to learn to paddle a canoe or kayak? Or do you already know how to paddle but need to improve or update your skills? Then read on:

Acacia Canoe Sales and Hire can provide paddle tuition at very reasonable cost. Basic Skills courses are the most commonly requested, however we are happy to tailor an individual program to meet your specific requirements. Instruction is usually held in a natural setting at one of several mid Brisbane River locations. As those learning in white water or sea kayaks will invariably end up getting wet, it is advisable before making a booking to assess the prevailing weather conditions to ensure you can undertake this activity without discomfort – we have found October to April to be best for this. You can use our equipment or bring your own if you prefer, however please be aware that kayak training is more effective when undertaken in stroke-sensitive white water kayaks.

Basic Skills Courses (single kayak or tandem canoe or kayak)

This course usually takes a minimum of 5 hours and can sometimes be quite strenuous for beginners who are advised to undertake regular upper body exercises in the week preceding the course. Course elements include equipment orientation, entry/exit technique, basic strokes (propulsion, steering and support), river reading skills and moving water tips and techniques. As a minimum you will need to bring: towel and change of clothes (kayakers will get wet); sunscreen, hat and sun-protective clothing/gear; solid footwear that can get wet (neoprene dive boots are preferred for kayaks); and adequate food and water.

Advanced Skills Courses

Talk to us about structuring a program to meet your specific requirements. Our Advanced instruction can expand on core elements of the Basic Skills course and/or include stroke correction, advanced white water technique, kayak rolling, surfing technique (static or dynamic waves) and basic rescue technique.

General:

    • Our business operating hours usually limit training activities to Sundays only.

    • Participants must sign a general indemnity including a statement of medical fitness.

    • Up to four participants are accepted per course (1 to 3 preferred) – our experience is that any more than this may compromise your learning experience.

    • Trainees must be at least 10 years of age although, realistically, those younger than 13-14 years often don’t possess the physical strength or stamina to derive maximum benefit from such courses. Any participant aged under 16 years must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

    • Contact us for our current rates and any other relevant requirements.

The paddle tuition offered by Acacia Canoes is aimed primarily at recreational canoeists and is not aligned specifically to the Australian Canoeing Award Scheme. Those requiring formal accreditation or specialised competition coaching should direct inquiries to Paddle Queensland at:
