4.4.2 Research skills

Teaching Point: I can research and gather information about a topic by using multiple sources.

Unit Outcome: Students will build knowledge and enhance their research skills by gathering information for their own academic pursuit.

1. scenario

Millions of children across the United States are learning online and staying home for safety reasons due to COVID-19. Because of this, many young children are not meeting the daily requirements to maintain healthy eating and exercising habits. The United States Department of Health in conjunction (together) with the Department of Education has created a competition for all students in the United States to create a Public Service Announcement on ways to promote how to stay healthy during remote learning.

Your task is to:

- research effective ways to maintain healthy eating habits and exercising,

- think of your own public service announcement and how you will convince or show others how to maintain healthy eating habits and exercising,

- create a storyboard of your ideas on this topic,

- and program an animation of your public service announcement.

2. High utility words

Public service announcement (PSA)

A public service announcement is a message that tries to convince an audience to change feelings or beliefs about a topic.

3. MINI lesson video

Watch this video to learn what you will do.

4. Your Turn

As you're thinking and planning what your Public Service Announcement will look like, review some other PSAs.

Use these questions to guide your thinking:

  • What is the topic this PSA is about?

  • Did the PSAs teach you something from watching it?

  • Do you feel convinced or persuaded about this topic?
