Lesson 5.4.3

Game Design Process: Preproduction

teaching point: I can develop a game concept by using the game design process.

Essential Question: What makes a successful game?

Unit Outcome: I can use the game design process to develop a prototype that considers design constraints.

2. Vocabulary Words to Know

Game Design Process: a series of steps to help design, develop and launch a game

3. game design process

We will use these seven steps to help design our game:

  1. Planning: This will give us a glimpse of what the game is all about. This is the first part of brainstorming for our game.

    • What type of game will be produce?

        • Action Game? Strategy Game? Puzzle Game?

    • Who will be the game characters?

    • Does the game have a setting?

    • Who will be our audience?

        • Young Children? Teenagers? Adults? Everyone?

  2. Preproduction: This is where we begin designing what the game will actually look like.

    • What will the first level look like?

    • Drawing an actual part or level of the game

  3. Production: This is where we bring our game to life: from paper to computer!

    • Begin designing the game on Scratch platform.

    • Use computer science concepts to program the game.

  4. Testing: This is where we test our game to make sure everything works properly!

    • Are our formulas working properly?

    • Are there any bugs we need to debug?

    • Does my character get stuck somewhere?

    • Does everything work properly on all different types of devices?

  5. Pre-launch: This is where we share our game to a few of our classmates and receive recommendations on how to improve our game.

    • Do our classmates think the game is fun?

    • Do our classmates find any issues that I did not see while making the game?

    • Use the recommendations to improve or enhance the game.

  6. Launch: This is where we share our game during our Game Exposition!

  7. Post Production: This is where we share the game with the world and continue to improve the game.

4. MINI LESSON

We will focus on the second step of the Game Design Process:

2. Preproduction: This is where we begin designing what the game will actually look like.

    • What will the first level look like?

    • Drawing an actual part or level of the game

Essential Question: As a computer scientist, how do I create a game?

Unit Outcome: I can use the game design process to develop a prototype.

5. Your turn

Now it's your turn to continue planning the game you will design! Go back to Google Classroom and continue working on the second page of the Jamboard from last week!
