MEDIA DESIGN - SEMESTER COURSE
Media Design is an elective course designed to permit students to investigate and
understand the ever-expanding world of technology and mass communications.
This course is offered in conjunction with Broadcast Journalism as an introductory-level
semester course. While much of the focus of the class is on developing the more technical
aspects of the broadcast medium as "behind the camera" personnel, students will also be
introduced to presentation and performance skills as they collaborate and interact with
Broadcast Journalism students on specific projects throughout the course and eventually switch
roles during the second semester.
By the end of the course, students will have demonstrated their understanding of modern Media
Design through improved communication skills, collaboration, research, performance, criticism,
and written work. .
PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS
Attendance: A student enrolled in this course is expected to be present at
Least 90% of the days that class is in session.
Achievement: A student must maintain a D-or better average for the two
marking periods.
OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of the course, the student will:
1. Improve personal communication skills, including public speaking and interviewing.
2 Gain "media literacy" and be able to watch television and acquire information with greater
appreciation and awareness of content and how that content is presented.
3 Acquire an appreciation of television's place in today's society by becoming acquainted With its
history and development.
4 Acquire skills in television production techniques and equipment.
5 Create television programs in several different genres and styles, taking projects from initial idea
to finished product.
6 Learn to write and communicate clearly and effectively by developing scripts and storyboards for
various productions.
7 Learn the value of teamwork in creating effective television productions.
