Brooks W. Mitchell

Brooks W. Mitchell is an Education Associate with the Space Science Institute, where he has helped lead Professional Development efforts for NASA, NSF, and IMLS-funded projects since 2017. Brooks empowers library staff and other informal educators to better engage their patrons in STEM content through workshops, presentations, papers, and more.


Brooks received his BA in geology from the University of Alabama in 2012 and began working with informal learning institutions shortly thereafter.


He received his Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) from Pennsylvania State University in 2021 and his Masters in GIS in 2022. His Masters capstone research focuses on the effect of public library programming on academic success rates in school districts in the Mountain West region.


Anne Holland

Anne Holland is a Senior Education Associate with the Space Science Institute, where she has led exhibit-focused efforts for NASA, NSF, NIH and IMLS-funded projects since 2012. Anne is also the manager of the STAR Library Education Network, a group of over 10,000 library staff committed to increasing STEAM programming in their libraries. Holland is the PI of the NASA funded NASA @ MyLibrary project, NSF funded STEAM Equity project, and SEAL (Solar Eclipse Activities for Libraries) funded by the Gordon adn Betty Moore Foundation.


Anne received her B.S. in astrophysics and B.A. in English Writing from the University of Hawaii in 2009 and received a master's degree in Space Studies in 2014.


She is currently finishing her PhD in Research Methods and Statistics from the Univerisity of Denver. Her dissertation research investigates on the ground experiences of current children's librarians in relation to the formal training they received during their MLIS programs.


James Harold

James Harold is the Director of Information Systems and Technology for the Space Science Institute, and the Acting Director of SSI's National Center for Interactive Learning.


James has a research background in space physics (PhD Physics, University of Maryland-College Park), and a long interest in the role of computers, simulations, and games in education.


He is currently Co-I for the NASA @ My Library project (funded by NASA); the Soclar Eclipse Activities for Libraries (Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation), and leads the NASA Artemis focused "From Our Town to the Moon, Mars, and Beyond" library exhibit program (NASA).

Catherine Payne

Catherine Payne is an adjunct instructor at the University of Guam where she teaches composition. In her spare time, she writes children's books. Her books include "A Pearl in the Night," "Ten Little Surfers in Hawai'i," "Chepchop Unai," "These Little Kittens in Hawai'i," and "I Lalai i Bilembaotuyan." Her forthcoming STEM picture book is "Mole and Tell."

Hot Off the Press: Publishing and Making Impact with Local Literature

This presentation discusses the impact of local literature on GCC college students and the work of one small non-profit to represent our region and voices in print.

Simone Efigenia Perez Bollinger

Simone is an Assistant Professor of English at Guam Community College where she is currently teaching Best Practices for Literacy Instruction to cohorts of CHamoru educators from GDOE and private institutions. She is also a founder and vice president of Ta Tuge’ Mo’na, a non-profit alternative press whose mission is to support literacy development in our region. She has published two children’s books in CHamoru, and is the editor of two anthologies of local literature. Her latest project is a book of essays by GDOE Language Arts teachers, A Window Unobscured, which will be available at the end of February.

Our presentation will focus on the importance of building connections within our school community in order to create a culture of love. It will start with how we change the culture in our schools by changing our outlook and doing little things that create stepping stones to building a foundation of trust, support & love for our students!

Christina Toves

Christina Toves is a kindergarten teacher at Harry S Truman Elementary. She has been teaching for the Guam Department of Education for ten years. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and Master of Education in Reading at the University of Guam. Christina has held positions such as ASPIRE coordinator, mock trial coach, teacher mentor, and classroom supervisor for the University of Guam. She is a proud resident of Santa Rita and enjoys time spent with family and friends.

Renee Sanchez

Mrs. Sanchez graduated with a bachelor's degree in special education from the University of Guam in Fall 1999. She began her teaching career in January 2000 where she taught special education at the newly opened Southern High School. In 2001, Mrs. Sanchez was offered a position at Harry S. Truman Elementary School, which she gladly accepted. Mrs. Sanchez went on to pursue her Master’s Degree in special education in December 2008 from the University of Guam . She has been teaching in Guam Public Schools for 23 years. Mrs. Sanchez has held positions as a summer school coordinator, ASPIRE / DEED coordinator, Aspire/ Deed Teacher, and Early Bird tutor.

Chelo Marie Paulino

Mrs. Chelo Marie Paulino is a middle school teacher at Jose Rios Middle School and an adjunct instructor at the University of Guam (UOG) and Guam Community College (GCC) for more than ten years now. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Computer Information Systems with a minor in Computer Science and Master of Arts Degrees in Business Administration and Teaching. She has held numerous leadership positions, including UOG Alumni Association president and vice president/president-elect, ASPIRE and Summer School Coordinator, School Team/Content leader; and is a member of the district’s Educational Technology and CTE (Career and Technical Education) Cadres. She was nominated as Guam Teacher of the Year in 2019 and made it to the semi-finals in 2020. She is passionate about teaching and learning and is a strong advocate for students. During her spare time, she likes to spend quality time with her husband and son and catch up on her reading.

Coming of Age in War-Torn Guam 


Jillette T. Leon-Guerrero

Historical Researcher and Publisher, Micronesian Area Research Associate, UOG and Guamology Inc., President 

Presentation Information

A personal journey and perspective of the value of family history and the creation of stories that can connect families. Using the author's experience recording and publishing the WWII memoirs of her father, Justo Torre Leon Guerrero titled: Coming of Age in War-Torn Guam, the author explains how she got involved in genealogy and family history and her experience learning about the importance of family stories and putting together the book.

Jillette T. Leon-Guerrero

Jillette Leon-Guerrero has a BA in Anthropology from the University of Guam, an MA in Human Relations from the University of Oklahoma, a post-graduate diploma from Strathclyde University [Glasgow, Scotland] in Genealogical, Palaeographic and Heraldic Studies, and certificates in Genealogical Research from Boston University and the Genealogical Institute on Federal Records [formerly the National Institute on Genealogical Research].


She is the President of Guamology Inc., a Guam-based publishing company. She also provides historical consulting services for Guampedia.com, the War in the Pacific National Historical Park, and various other Guam organizations. Active in community service organizations, Leon-Guerrero has served on the Board of Regents of the University of Guam, is a Research Associate of the Micronesian Area Research Center; Registrar of the Mariana Islands Chapter, National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, and is a Life member of the Guam Women’s Club and a past president. She is an avid researcher and historian.


She has a passion for historical research, especially as it relates to Guam. She is an active genealogist who has helped adoptees, and other individuals find unknown family members, provided lineage reports for court cases involving inheritance, and provided genealogical research for families interested in expanding their family trees. Leon-Guerrero, a resident of Agana Heights, Guam, is married to Jean Lescure. She is the proud mother of two sons, Christopher and Island, grandmother to two grandsons, Christian and Chauncy, and a granddaughter, Una.
