Cycling SAFETY
Cycling should be a safe and positive experience for everybody
There are not many rules in our club, but please note the following: -
Wearing a helmet whilst cycling is mandatory in our club.
Be visible. Obviously front and rear lights are a must if riding in the dark. However more and more cyclists also use lights during the day, particularly a rear light. Wearing appropriate clothing will also help you to be seen; this doesn't have to be a hi viz jacket but a black skin suit may not be the most sensible attire!
Obey all the rules of the road as if you were driving a vehicle. Never ride through a red light!
Ride no more than 2 abreast and single file where roads are busy and narrow
Ride in a safe and responsible manner, and respect our fellow road users, whether on wheels, foot or horse
No tri-bars (aero bars) on your bike please as these can be hazardous when riding in a group
Slow down when approaching pedestrians walking along the road, or horse riders, and alert them to the fact of your presence if needed
When riding in a group try to alert others to any hazards in the road if safe to do so, e.g. pot holes, debris
Please acknowledge other riders on the road with either a hello or a wave, and smile
Incidents of dangerous driving
Its a fact of life in road cycling that there may be times when you experience an incident of dangerous driving, usually as a 'close pass'. We encourage reporting such incidents to the Police. Some of our members have bike cameras which enables video evidence to be uploaded to the Police 'Operation Snap' website. https://operationsnap.devon-cornwall.police.uk/
