Button Hill by Michael Bradford

Author: Bradford, Michael

Publisher: Orca Book Publishers

If you are afraid of dark spaces and horror-filled tales then this is not the book for you. If, however, you enjoyed the underworldlyness of Coraline by Neil Gaiman and the despair of the Lemony Snicket stories and you’re not afraid of the undead then read on.

Dekker and his sister Riley are sent to stay with their weird and slightly crabby Aunt Primrose at Button Hill. The discovery of a dark cellar, a clock made of bones and a strange boy all begin their descent into Nightside. Will Dekker find his sister after a stupid prank goes awry and what will it cost him to bring her back?

If this all sounds too dreadful, then return to Dayside and find another story to read, this is not the one for you.

For the most part, I enjoyed this. I found it a little drawn out in places but the descriptions of characters and places had me entranced. Give it a go, if you dare.

Bookish Quote.

“A good library will never be too neat, or too dusty, because somebody will always be in it, taking books off the shelves and staying up late reading them”. Daniel Handler AKA Lemony Snicket.
