Curriculum

Purpose

The purposes of the curriculum in Wales should be that children and young people develop as:

  • ambitious, capable learners, ready to learn throughout their lives

  • enterprising, creative contributors, ready to play a full part in life and work

  • ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world

  • healthy, confident individuals, ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society.

St. Cadoc’s Catholic Primary School is a Welsh Government Curriculum Pioneer School. We are currently researching and piloting curriculum models that best meet the needs of our children and raise standards and aspirations, in accordance with ‘Successful Futures’.

St Cadoc's School Vision

The school’s Vision was revised during 2017-2018, in consultation with all staff and governors. It aims to encapsulate three elements:

1. high academic achievement for all;

2. development of personal values/virtues for our whole school community; &

3. reflect the distinctive Catholic nature of the school.

Curriculum Overview

  • Religious Education (RE)

RE is a core subject with 10% of teaching time committed to RE, approximately 2 hours 15 minutes per week.

This does not include worship or meditation.

  • LLC/English & MD/Mathematics

There are daily sessions in all year groups (45-60 minutes).

  • Welsh Second Language (WSL)

Bilingualism is promoted in all areas of school life. This includes informal/incidental use of Welsh outside of the lessons, e.g. prayer and worship; registration; playground; and school canteen, etc. There are short formal WSL in each class (10-15 minutes); these include games, songs and activities to practice and consolidate children’s oracy skills. There are also longer weekly WSL sessions in all year groups (45-60 minutes).

  • Health and Wellbeing (H&WB):

The various elements are taught both discretely and through other areas of the curriculum. Units of work related to personal, social and healthy living are planned and taught by PPA teachers across all year groups.

FP children participate in 2 x PD/PE/Dance sessions each week. These sessions and planned and led by FP teachers and PPA teachers.

All KS2 children participate in 2 x weekly PE sessions led by KS2 teachers and PPA teachers.

  • Science and Humanities:

Topic units are taught in rotation across the terms/year, approximately 3-4 hours per week.

  • Technology:

ICT is taught weekly (45-60 minutes). Units of work related to design technology and craft are blocked into full day and half session each term.

  • Expressive Arts:

The various elements are taught both discretely and through other areas of the curriculum. In FP units of work related to visual art are planned and taught by teachers across all year groups. In KS2 these units are blocked into full day and half day sessions. Units of dance form part of the long term plan for PD/PE across all year groups. Units of music are taught weekly in specific terms, supported by Upbeat Music and Arts. Drama is taught across the curriculum.

  • Cross-curricular responsibilities (CCR)

The curriculum needs to ensure that children and young people develop high levels of competence in 3 cross-curricular responsibilities and have frequent opportunities to develop, extend and apply them across the curriculum.

These are:

Literacy

Numeracy

Digital Competence
