Theodosian Land Walls

The Defences of the Theodosian Land Walls

by Stephen Francis Wyley

When the picture was taken in 1994 the water was being used by market gardeners to water their crops.

During our stay in Istanbul I also dragged Denise along a trek along the Theodosian Land walls, I got caught up with a fascination of the Seven tower complex, and we did not make all the way.

The Marble Tower.

Thanks to Peter Raftos I can provided this picture of the "Marble Tower" at the junction of the Sea and Land walls.

For more information see: The Land Walls

An arrow slit from the outside.

The same arrow slit from the inside.

These are the only pictures I took of the tower complex at the union of the Sea and Land walls. Note the difference in the size of the slit compared to the embrasure behind.

A polygonal tower south of the Yedikule.

A polygonal wall tower with a postern next to the flanking wall.

Inner roof and upper walls of lower story of wall tower.

One jamb of the postern showing the 'putlog' holes

The other jamb of the postern doorway

The jambs on either side of the postern clearly show the 'putlog' hole used to secure the postern. So the end of the 'putlog' is place in the hole on the left then the other end is slid into place in the 'L' shape slot on the right.

The view from the north western tower of the Yedikule.

The view south from one of the towers of Yedikule.

The view north from the same tower.

There are market gardens in the moat on the left and water storage in the moat on the right.

The Battlements overlooking the moat.

Looking through a crenel into the moat, note the corn crop.

An arrow slit in one of the merlons in front of the outer gate of the Yedikule.

The Landwalls between the Yedikule and the Silver Gate.

The Theodosian Land walls north of the Yedikule, looking north to the Silver Gate.

The Theodosian Land walls looking south to the Yedikule.

A section of the Theodosian Land walls, crops are being raised in sections of the moat.

A section of the Theodosian Land Walls, partly renovated.

The reconstructed Silver Gate.
