A look back

What personal strengths do I presently have due to positive experiences and good people in my past?

Love for God and the Church. I went to church as a lad at 7 years of age and enjoyed it. I went to vacation Bible School and loved to answer the questions to the lessons. The Sunday School teachers were also Boy Scout leaders so I attended the troop also. I became a faithful attender and continued to go to this church until I went away to college. I went on Sunday mornings, Sunday evenings, Wednesday evenings for supper, visitation, prayer, choir practice, and boy scouts.

Leadership - Children attending schools that I went to also attended the Boy Scouts, so we became good friends. I was also an achiever at school and when I went to college I continued to stay involved in church life and Christian Student Life. I was on the Baptist Student Union committees and spent summers as a Christian Missionary and Youth Leader for area churches.

Academics and early work - I graduated from college and was called to ministry so I enrolled and graduated from SWBTS with a Masters in Divinity. I did an internship at the Baptist Hospital as a chaplain and saw social workers involved there. I married my high school sweetheart who I met at church and we served together at our first job at a homeless ministry at First Baptist Church San Antonio, Texas. The minister there encouraged me to take Social Work classes and when I was prevented by the school to continue part-time education, My wife and I moved to the Baptist Children’s home to work and live and I finished my Masters in Social Work. While I worked as a music minister on Sundays at Central Baptist Church, one of my choir members introduced me to financial planning so I became licensed in Insurance and Real Estate. Eventually, an opening became available at the Bexar County Hospital so I became a Social Worker on the medical floors and emergency room. When my wife enrolled in her doctorate in Denton, I continued to work in rehabilitation at the county hospital in Dallas until I received the advanced clinical practitioner designation as a social worker. I continued to work as a social worker while I applied to law schools. I was accepted at South Texas College of Law and became an attorney in 1995. I married my second wife in 1993 and I adopted my son in 1996 when he was two days old.

A family man-I developed a pattern of spending an hour with my son every morning when he woke up and an hour with him prior to bedtime. I dedicated my weekends to my family all day Saturday and half of a day on Sundays. When my son was 3, I began to coach him in basketball and baseball. I introduced him to swim team and gymnastics, piano, drama, drums, guitar, choir, archery, bowling and until the 4th grade he was always on the honor roll at school. Even after my second divorce, I volunteered at my son’s school for fund raisers, bicycle safety day, and field trips. I went to his school twice a month to eat lunch with him and once a month for breakfast. By the Grace of God, I never missed a visitation schedule with him nor a child support payment.

Self-employed Attorney- I spent my last year in law school clerking for a Christian, Judge John Devine. He introduced me to a Christian Attorney, Jack Cagle, for whom I worked for a year but when he lost his bid to become a judge, had to reduce his overhead and I began solo practice. He later was appointed to a judgeship and has been regularly elected thereafter. These men taught me that their was a Christian mission to the law practice and I have done over a 1000 hours of pro bono work for the body of Christ. I have defended Christians and non-Christians and few clients have not heard or seen the Word of God from my lips as I endeavor to live the Scriptures. Gotta Tell Somebody, Don Francisco
