Rob Hornby raising funds from kind football supporters.

Rob is an avid supporter of non-league football, attending matches throughout the season and he raises money by donating 25p for every goal he sees and also collecting donations from people at the football clubs. We can keep track of the running total of money he has raised after each match on his blog  Around The Grounds . At the end of the season he will kindly donate the money raised to our support group. All the money raised goes into helping and supporting our members. Thank you very much Rob.

Talitha Williamson raises £512 after braving a parachute jump

After delays due to weather, Talitha bravely completed her parachute jump at Langar Airfield on the 21st October. Talitha managed to raise a fantastic £512 for the group. She was scheduled to make the jump two dates earlier but these were canceled because of bad weather. Holding her nerve, she was able to make the jump on the third date. Well done Talitha and a huge thanks from the group.

On the 6th March the Rotary Club of Kirkby-In-Ashfield presented our group with a donation of £1700 which came from the proceeds from their fundraising Santa's Grotto at Ruben Shaw's garden centre last December. With much thanks to them and for their ongoing support for the group.

On Saturday the 20th August, The Nottingham Building Society (Hucknall Branch) very generously set up a fundraising event for our group. On offer to its customers were refreshments and activities for children which included face painting, hook-a-duck and a painting competition for prizes. We would send a big thank you to all the staff for their hard work and support.

We had a really busy October meeting which was attended by the Mobile Mini Zoo who brought along some of their creatures for our members to handle, click here for some of the photos. In addition to this, the Nottinghamshire Community Foundation presented the group with a cheque for £2000. A big thank you goes out to them.

Freda Colley Presented with Samaritan Award

On September 12th, organiser and committee member Freda Colley was presented with the Samaritan award by the Sutton In Ashfield Rotary Club. Well done Freda!

To our very great surprise a few weeks ago, a call was received from the Coca Cola company saying that they had found our website on Google and felt that we would be a worthy cause for a donation. A short while later our account was credited, as promised with a donation of £656 WOW. A big thank you goes to the Coca Cola Company for their very generous donation to our group. As always this will be spent purely for the benefit of the members of the group.

Honorary Life Membership For Group Stalwart Freda Colley

At our meeting on the 19th May Pam Andrews, our chairperson presented Freda Colley with a bouquet of flowers and a lovely hand made card by Joan Cannan on behalf of the group, in recognition of Freda's invaluable contribution to people with dementia and their carers over many years. Without Freda's commitment our group would not have been started up. The committee unanimously and enthusiastically have conferred honorary life membership to Freda and we all look forward to her continuing support and involvement. Fire Safety Talk

Also on the 19th Andy Oxnard and Emma Darby from the Nott's Fire & Rescue Service gave an entertaining and informative talk about fire safety. They demonstrated devices and gave very good advice to a very appreciative audience of 25 members.

Rotary Donation 

The Rotary club of Sutton in Ashfield has kindly presented us with a cheque for £1000 after they nominated us as Presidents charity of the year! This was received by Freda Colley and Joan Cannon on behalf of the group. We are all aware of the amazing fundraising done by the Rotary Clubs and are delighted to be a beneficiary of this work. Thanks to the donation we have arranged a free trip for members to Hardwick Hall. Details of the trip will be posted on this website. The rest of the money will as usual be put towards the activities to benefit the members of the group. Many thanks to Rotary of Sutton in Ashfield.

 

Trip to Hardwick Hall Gardens.

On Monday 12th August we have arranged a free trip for all our members to visit Hardwick Hall gardens which includes a drink and a cake. Hopefully we'll all need sun hats and sun cream on the day!

Support Group Chairman Is Honoured With Medal

We are delighted to announce that Pam Andrews, the groups chairman has been awarded the British Empire Medal. Her long standing, valuable volunteer work with people with dementia and carers for our group and other support groups in the past has been recognised. At the July meeting we will be having a fun and easy quiz with prizes so get your thinking caps ready.

Volunteer Charity Market Raises Cash For The Group.

On the 30th of May Joan Cannan and Joan & John Sharp braved the cold wet and windy weather to stand on Sutton market to raise funds and provide information about our group. We would like to thank everybody who donated items for the tombola with special thanks to Ann & Brian's granddaughter who donated lots of lovely soft toys. It also gave us the opportunity to talk to other charities and network for the benefit of our group.

Day Trip To Derby Garden Centre

On the 29th April there will be a trip for members of the group to Derby Garden Centre near Little Eaton, Derby. The trip is being paid for by donations to the group and from fund raising events. Transport is included and also a free drink and cake for everyone. Carer Services Talk

Kate Whittaker NCC will be talking to the group about carers' services at our meeting on the 20th May.

 

Sing To Bring Back The Memories

Our June meeting will see or rather hear members singing back the memories! Ann Hill will take a favourite song request from each member/couple and help the good memories come flowing back.

Donation By Shelley Ward

On 4th October Jean, Joan and Jim attended a lovely harvest festival service on Shelley Ward at Ashfield Community hospital. Following the service a box full of grocery items was given to the group which had been collected by Shelley ward to be used to raise funds for our group. These items will be put into the tombola in December (See next news item).

 

Craft and Gift Fair Fundraising Tombola

On Sunday 2nd December 10am - 4pm there will be a craft and gift fair at the Handley Arcade ('Sally Twinkle's Arcade') near the Mansfield Museum and Palace Theatre on Leeming Street, Mansfield. We will be fundraising for the group on our tombola stall and would love to see you there. If you have any donations for the tombola stall then please call Freda on 01623 556065 so we can arrange to collect them or you can drop them off at the meeting on Monday 19th November.

Movement and Music in Dance4 style class

At our next meeting on the 17th September we will be holding a Dance4 style session of gentle movement and music. With a Dance4 trained tutor, everyone can take part in gentle seated movement to music using scarves, bubbles etc. For those able to do so, culminating in a parachute 'lift' and traditional old-time dance. This should be very colourful!

Meeting Speakers

Jane Brown will be talking to the group about Crossroads day care at the meeting on the 16th July. On the 14th August meeting Carol Anstey will be showing us how to create a life story book.

 

Raising Funds

On Saturday 14th July some of the group’s committee members will be at Morrisons, Kirkby-In-Ashfield to help raise funds for our group. Please come along to support us and tell your friends too.

Your Life Stories To Be Recorded

on June 18th we will be reminiscing and starting to create life stories. We will provide the materials for recording your memories so please bring along photos and things you treasure from the past if you can.

Relax and breathe easy class

At the meeting on the 21st May we will be doing breathing for stress relief using simple yoga techniques demonstrated by Dawn who is a qualified yoga instructor. These exercises can be done seated.

 

Visit By Ashfield District Councillor

Councillor John Knight will also be visiting us to see what we get up to at the group meetings on the 21st May and we hope the Chad might come along to cover the visit too. Start practising your smiles!

Holiday Memory Box Loan

We are delighted to let you know that we are being loaned a Holiday Memory Box from the Mansfield Museum. We are sure the contents of the box will provoke lively discussions and evoke strong memories of past holidays. We will be opening the memory box at our next meeting on the 16th April

Day Trip Announced

We are also very pleased to announce that we have arranged our first trip out which will be to Felley Priory garden on the 25th June. The trip is free with tea and cake provided. More details will be given closer to the time.
