Single Paradiddle

A paradiddle consists of two alternating strokes followed by a double stroke.

While practicing these, say "pa-ra-di-ddle" while playing.

Pa = down stroke, Ra = up stroke, Di-ddle = two tap strokes.

Single Paradiddle Video

Watch the video below to see a demonstration of a single paradiddle, an explanation and then guided practice with Mrs. Stewart.

Beginning - 1:26: Explanation and demonstration.

1:26 - end: Paradiddle practice using the exercise below.

After practicing with the video and mastering the sticking and stroke patterns, try to get the paradiddles to go as fast and as clean as possible.

To work up to a fast paradiddle, start by playing the above exercise at 120 beats per minute for a few minutes each day. Once you've mastered that tempo, start speeding up the tempo up to 180 beats per minute. Once you reach 180 beats per minute, turn the quarter notes into eighth notes and put the metronome at 90 beats per minute, and start working your way up again. We want these to get as fast and as clean as possible!
