About

 Village Song

Village song is a non-auditioned all welcome amateur choir in Devonport, New Zealand. We aim to enjoy singing, improve our singing skills, and benefit from the social platform the choir provides with tea breaks during rehearsals and social events on offer twice a year (mid-winter and Christmas). Musically, the choir has an emphasis on gospel but also offers pop, jazz and folk songs - all within a range of slow to more up-beat tunes. There are a few concerts/performances spread throughout the year, and we particularly enjoy our Christmas Concerts.

The choir is led by Helene 'Leny' Piper (MMusEd/vocals and choir specialty 2006) who has conducted several choirs over the past 25 years. She is enthusiastic about a choir being an instrument and puts much effort into playing it well to make it sound fantastic. She also emphasizes the social aspect of singing together and aims to provide a forum where positivity, confidence and the joy of singing as a team can thrive. Apart from conducting Village Song, Helene also works full time as HOD Performing Arts at Belmont Intermediate School and regularly performs with our local guitarist/singer/songwriter Diane Ponzio and her trio.
