How Electric Water Heaters Work

Electric hot water heater are wired to a 220-volt circuit. To warm the water, an electric existing go through electrical-resistance heating elements. There are typically 2 heating elements-- one in the middle of the tank and one at the bottom.

Power is delivered to the heating elements through a thermostat that senses the water temperature level. When the temperature level drops, the thermostat resists existing circulation, triggering it to develop and create heat. When water gets to the appropriate temperature level, it allows the present to flow like normal. Thermostats can be set to any temperature level you pick-- for optimum effectiveness and convenience, you must set yours to 120 F.

When a hot-water tap is opened, cold water enters the tank through the dip tube. The drop in water temperature will trigger the thermostat, which will kick on the heating elements. When the tap is switched off, the heating elements continue to carry present until the thermostats are pleased.
