Fur Tor New Years Day 2009 - 2024

Fur Tor North - New Years Day Photos'

Below is a historical photographic archive of the New year get-together of walkers who brave the sometimes harsh conditions to visit Dartmoors' most remote tor on the first day of the year

No less than 25 made their way to Fur Tor for the NYD meet this year, with the East Dart route from Postbridge being the favoured approach. The weather behaved in the morning, but shortly before midday, some of Dartmoor's finest filth rolled in, soaking all on their long trek back to their cosy cars. It was an improved year for letterboxing with 3 different one-day stamps being passed around under umbrellas by at least 5 collecting. Some other mysterious types were spotted on the high Moor's horizons who did not attend the meet - 2 camping in Tavy Hole and another heading from Cut Hill to Summer Hill. Could it have been the phantom tap installer plumbing another helpless tor? Who knows? Anyway, a happy new year to all who read this and wishing you health and many happy days on the moor in 2024.

Thanks to - Edd Jefferis for above info.

Happy New Year from Fur Tor

The ground however was waterlogged and we paddled most of the way there and back. Around thirty people turned up during the day with around twenty five present just after midday. The Editor brought a small group from Postbridge with the official one day letterbox stamp and the visitors book. Three brave people camped overnight beside the tor, it was a wet night with some heavy showers. Two of the campers, Nigel and Tracey, arrived from Postbridge the evening before; it was ‘a bit moist’ they said. The Plymouth Ramblers were there again, also coming from Postbridge, in fact most people came up the East Dart from Postbridge. Eric and Sheena Felton trekked in from Fernworthy, while some walkers who tried to walk in from Land End did not arrive, possibly because of problems crossing the rivers including Rattlebrook, Tavy and Amicombe Brook.

Thanks to Paul Rendell for compiling above account.

Dave the Photographer

Although very wet underfoot, the weather forecast didn’t look too bad. There was even a promise of clear skies in the afternoon- of course this never happened! We were subjected to very light intermittent rain, medium to high breezes and mist for the whole day.

For the photo at noon there were 15 folk plus the photographer, I believe there may have been a couple more lost souls wandering around in the mist!

Hats off to the father & son team that this year ventured from Fernworthy..!  (think these have the big red stamp in the visitors book.

A Dartmoor Guide and a Tor naming specialist Max. (Postbridge)

A walking group of 5 Plus doggy – called the FAB group. (Postbridge)

A boxer who made the trip down from Wales -  well done.

Six Geocachers who had been up to no good near-by. (2 x Baggator) (4 x Postbridge).

Our personal route this year took in Broadun, Flat Tor, West Dart Head and return via Cut Hill and Kit Rocks.

Well done everyone for keeping this going. The duplicate Official Fur Tor letterbox was retrieved and brought in. Thanks to Dartmoor Bounders for providing the special stamp.

Cheers Dave

Happy NewYear from Fur Tor 2021.

Ed Jefferis, JP & Emma were the only visitors this year

Emma and JP were stalked by Edd... from Rundlestone to Fur Tor. The crisp and flossy conditions allowed for a quick journey out, but the return grew rather slushy. They were rewarded with the pinkest sunrise over Mistor Marsh, and Emma had carved a wonderful letterbox to commemorate the day. See if you can spot it in the Fur Tor letterbox logbook.

Happy NewYear from Fur Tor 2019.

A really good turn out at Fur Tor today estimated between 35- 45 visitors. The groups consisted of letterboxers, wild campers, geocachers, and 365ers. Rounding them up for a photo was easier said than done (could of done with a sheepdog rather than a Jack Russell). So the photos are missing some folk, in fact some boxers were on their return leg by 11:30am. Thanks to the Bounders for providing the special letterbox.
