We are siblings, with a love for martial arts and all nerdy things. Born and raised in France, we moved to Canada after high school and never left. When Val obtained a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Toronto, and Clarisse obtained a Master's Degree in Biochemistry from McGill University roughly at the same time, we decided to take some time away from academia and focus on what matters most to us. Combining Clarisse's knowledge of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Val's expertise in Boxing, we created the Armoured Self Defense program: a short, comprehensible and inclusive series of self defense classes adapted to everyone's needs, brought directly to your community center. Our goal is to share our passion for martial arts with members of underserved communities who may not have easy access to it.
Clarisse is 26 years old, completed her Master’s degree in Biochemistry at McGill in Summer 2019. She has been practicing Jiu-Jitsu for 3 years for which she earned a blue belt, and has been teaching Jiu-Jitsu classes for children at Carlson Gracie Montreal for over a year. As a woman, Clarisse is well aware of the discrimination and unwanted attention that women have to face in their everyday lives.
Val is 28 years old, completed his PhD in Mathematics at the University of Toronto in Summer 2019, where he was also working as a Math lecturer. Val has been practicing boxing for 8 years and competed 4 fights. Val is female to male transgender and a gay man. He transitioned at 25 years old and struggled with his body image for many years. He is now very open about his transgenderism and sexuality, and is very comfortable with his body. He is convinced that the boxing community, his supporting boxing coach, and simply the love of the sport was the biggest thing that helped him become who he is today and is forever grateful.
