Sustainability

The school will align with the State’s goal to achieve Net Zero Greenhouse Gas emissions by 2050. The natural environment in Swampscott was a consideration in the site decision and the importance of sustainability in this process. We ultimately chose a site with a N/S exposure to maximize daylighting and reduce energy costs. The site for the twin schools is currently a school site and no conservation or protected land is being taken for the school. The adjacency to Ewing Woods is a benefit both to shading the school and as a natural resource that students will be able to access. The gravel walkway and entirety of Ewing Woods will be retained. There is a rain garden on site to collect runoff and the landscaping with be all native and easy to care for plants. These spaces along with outdoor learning areas will serve as reminders that we are all steward of the natural world.
