What is STEM Education?
STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach to develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills and facilitate innovation. A STEM lesson plan often starts by presenting students with a problem. The key to STEM curriculum is choosing problems students can relate to and engaging students in hands-on exploration of the topic. The curriculum also prepares students for careers that focus primarily on STEM areas and those that use it as a part of the job. STEM areas are some of the fastest growing fields in the word.
Why is STEM education important? STEM is important because it pervades every part of our lives. Science is everywhere in the world around us. Technology is continuously expanding into every aspect of our lives. Engineering is the basic designs of roads and bridges, but also tackles the challenges of changing global weather and environmentally-friendly changes to our home. Mathematics is in every occupation, every activity we do in our lives. By exposing students to STEM and giving them opportunities to explore STEM-related concepts, they will develop a passion for it and hopefully pursue a job in a STEM field.
How can STEM education shape the future?
With a future full of opportunities, new industries and the emerging technologies are interconnected globally. Together, they represent a line between economic opportunity and economic limitations. Therefore, the drive for better education and training in science, technology, engineering, and math or STEM is strongly supported. STEM jobs are among the highest paying in today’s workforce. To many people, STEM education and training requires a four-year degree. In actuality it doesn't always. The future is STEM. With a STEM education and training, you are prominent to get a job and to become prosperous with one of the highest paying jobs.

Project Based Learning (PBL) is a constructivist instructional approach where students are engaged in meaningful inquiry of personal interest to them and where collaboration and personalized learning are emphasized. STEMSOS is a rigorous, interdisciplinary, standards-focused, and engaging STEM teaching approach that is teacher-facilitated, student-centered and directed through sets of project- and inquiry-based (P&IBL) projects. STEMSOS PBL approach is to maintain the focus on standards-based teaching while enriching and extending the learning of students through PBL projects. The goal is to promote not only collaborative skills and student ownership of learning but also to promote student success in state and national standards.
STEMSOS PBL Showcase is designed to promote and share exemplary student work in PBL projects that can serve as valuable learning and teaching tools for students, parents, teachers, and other educators.
