After School English Club

SEL (Social and Emotional Learning)

and

Music (and other media including movies and TV)

In this class we will discuss healthy emotions and social interaction. The curriculum we will use is the SEE Learning curriculum as developed by Emory University’s Center for Contemplative Science and Compassion-Based Ethics (CCSCBE). In addition to this, we will also discuss Music and other media (including movies and TV).

The students will develop such skills as mindfulness, resourcing, grounding, and awareness. The students will work toward the enduring capabilities as mentioned in the SEE Learning Companion and Framework (available at https://compassion.emory.edu/SEE-learning.pdf)

By the end of the course, the students will be able to practice mindfulness and hold their attention for at least 3 minutes; use English to name and identify one or two things that contribute to their happiness, inner-strength and well-being; and implement self-calming techniques in order to avert negative emotions.

In addition to this, the students will also learn to identify and appreciate music foreign or previously unknown to them. We will listen to and identify some of the key components of jazz, classical music, and music from other countries and cultures. The students will read, say and use key musical terms in English.

Moreover, if the students find the constant discussions on foreign music boring and tedious, then we will shift the focus of the class to discuss movies, TV, and internet stars.

The students should be prepared for group work, lots of projects, sharing, and speaking English in front of the other classmates. Students are expected to arrive on time and contribute to the class. This is a project based / student centred class where students will be the driving force of the class.
