Attic Access 2007

This is R15 kraft-faced insulation in an end-wall, and a course of R19 unfaced batts over existing R19 kraft-faced insulation.

This attic was vacuumed clean of cellulose to facilitate rewiring. R11 kraft batts are crossed by R30 batts. Top course batts 16"x48" seem to be most versatile, and suitable for pickup to regain access.

This large attic has plenty of headroom on decking set above R43 insulation (R30 batts on top of 3 1/2" of cellulose). The project started with installation of a Rainbow ladder. The first level of decking, at the ladder, is up just 5 1/2", over R19 batts.

Before and after: R18 rock wool with unsure footing becomes clean R43, with secure walk-ways.

An upper attic drywall cover is strengthened and made easier to handle, with light-weight wood framing and a captured R15 kraft batt. With a large piece of drywall, more framing and insulation would cause danger in handling. I did not start out silly enough to just tie down a batt with twine and staples.
