The ancient Egyptians believed in the power of words to heal so much that they made tea from healing words written on papyrus--and drank it. In this healing poetry workshop, participants embrace the transformative power of their own creativity. Through reading example poems together, writing their own poems from prompts, then reading the poems they have created, participants develop a deeper understanding of their own writing as a healing path.

Writing and Editing

Six-week one-on-one course, online, available fall and spring

Discover your own poetic voice through this individualized online course in writing and editing poetry. Each poem has its own landscape, and Malaika King Albrecht will help you navigate yours. Weekly prompts and thoughtful feedback will inspire you to write the poems you’ve always wanted to write.

“In critiquing workshops Malaika makes valuable contributions to the work of others, always with a keen eye and an alert ear. She recognizes the importance of rhythm and diction as well as meaning and knows how to help writers ‘suggest, rather than declare.’ Her critiques are both always on the mark and phrased in quietly encouraging language, so that the writer is not dismayed but impelled to continue crafting the poem.

Poetry for Children

90-minute workshops and residencies

Kids are naturally creative. When Malaika King Albrecht tells them there aren’t any mistakes, they bypass their fear of writing. “You don’t want to contain a poem that wants to be wild,” she teaches. “Containment comes afterward. That’s called editing.” With a solid foundation of poetic technique, a healthy dose of freedom and engaging prompts, Malaika’s students learn to create the quality of poems that win student poetry contests across North Carolina.

"Malaika’s poetry exercises were always well planned and exciting. Each session the students learned a new form of poetry. Then, she assisted them as they wrote their own poetry. She had students share poetry with the class, some entered poetry contests, and some poetry was posted on our classroom web page. For example, during the Haiku lessons, she took the students on a nature walk. Then she had the students create a nature haiku class book. The lessons were dynamic! Her classroom management skills are excellent and she has a wonderful way with all the students. Each student in my class found their own success with her guidance. She hooked every student into loving poetry."
