DAVID

SHPB tests analysis software

David software provides a complete processing for SHPB tests. It has been designed to perform an analysis of the numerical data in the form of the stored voltage signals from two gauge stations glued on both bars. These bars and the striker are made of possibly different materials and diameters, including low impedance viscoelastic bars. The most recent features included in the program are:

– dispersion correction including the case of viscoelastic bars;

– precise shifting assisted by the simulation of the initial elastic response of the specimen;

– calibration procedures based on energy and momentum balance (striker/input bar and input bar/output bar).

A correction of bar punching by the specimen is available.

Specimens with shoulders are supported.

The fundamental results delivered by David are the speed and force at both specimen faces.

Derived from these results, a simplified Kolsky type analysis is available. It is based on the assumption of specimen equilibrium using any couple of the 3 basic waves (incident, reflected and transmitted) to deliver specimen stress and strain. A better analysis is proposed by David, deriving the strain from the speeds at both specimen faces and the stress from the output force, or the average between the input and the output force.

The subsequent treatment is standard. It can take into account the friction at specimen ends and lateral inertia effects using empirical formulas found in the literature and established in the particular case of elastoplastic specimens. It provides stress, strain, strain-rate (engineering and true) and absorbed energy to be possibly used for thermal analysis.
