APA Copyediting

Fully copyediting a writing involves ensuring that the paper is first properly formatted to meet the requirements of APA and a particular college, university, or publisher's specifications. This involves page, paragraph, and line spacing. In general, Word documents are not automatically set up to meet APA, academic, or any other specific formatting requirements. This must be manually handled by the writer or copyeditor and must be based on the specific institution's guidelines. Clear Cut Academic Editing Services will ensure that your paper meets the appropriate formatting guides necessary for your writing.

Included in the formatting process is also a paper's Table of Contents, List of Tables, List of Figures, References, and Appendices. These sections must also meet proper APA and institutional standards.

Copyediting a document involves ensuring the following:

• Spelling, capitalization, and punctuation are correct

• Consistent capitalization

• Proper use of acronyms

• Fixing errors in word usage (e.g., their when there is meant)

• Font is 12-point Times New Roman (or another font if required)

• Table of Contents matches chapter, section titles, and page numbers of document

• Flow

• Consistency throughout the document regarding reasons, goals, or purpose of the writing

• Appropriate APA-style section headings

• Short, subject-related paragraph content (at least three sentence paragraphs does not apply in academic writing)

• Spacing and indenting consistency throughout the document

• Correct subject-verb relationship

• Move or query text that appears to be in an incorrect section heading

• Page numbers including Roman numbered pages are located in the correct area on the page (header or footer)

• Adjust tables and figures* to meet APA compliance (*This involves simple issues with figures. I am not good with graphics.)

• et al., ampersands (&), and the word "and" are used correctly

• Direct quotes of 40+ words are placed in block quotes

• What is listed in the Reference Section, in-text citations, and appendices meet APA style standards

Please note that when I copyedit in-text citations and the Reference Section, I assume that the names of the authors and their initials are correct, including the spelling of their names, the year is correct, the name of the article or book (and edition of the book) is correct, and are accounted for in the Reference Section. I do not verify that each citation or reference is correct online. I only check when there is missing information.

Please understand that I do not rewrite or write any sections or paragraphs in papers. I am not an expert on content area and I do not edit for content or substance. I also do not determine if a writing adequately or accurately follows the procedure for or explains a qualitative, quantitative, or a mixed methods approach of a study. Only your committee or adviser are experts and qualified to make such determinations. Please consult with them on all questions concerning content and substance. If you need writing assistance, please seek help from your university's writing center. I am a copyeditor. I edit to ensure flow, consistency, grammar, punctuation, spelling, capitalization, paragraphing, and specific requirements for style and formatting. Thank you!
