The electrical system within your house is often hidden away, with little thought given to it until there is a problem! It's essential to have things inspected regulary to ensure things are working as expected.

So What is a consumer unit?
Modern consumer units are designed to be safe, flexible and upgradable. As you can see from the image below, there are a few main parts that make up a consumer unit. We explain what each part does below.
Often houses still have old style fuse boards installed. Whilst still serving a purpose after 30 years they don't offer the level of safety a modern consumer unit will provide.

Main incomer - This is the main switch for all circuits served by the consumer unit. It is double pole meaning it isolates both the incoming live and neutral.
RCD - An RCD, or residual current device, is a life-saving device which is designed to prevent you from getting a fatal electric shock if you touch something live, such as a bare wire. It can also provide some protection against electrical fires. RCDs offer a level of personal protection that ordinary fuses and circuit-breakers cannot provide.
MCB - Miniature Circuit Breakers MCBs are installed in modern consumer units, and are a convenient alternative to fuses as they can be reset without having to replace wire with a simple flick of a switch or button.
