Postgraduate Certificates 


An overview of the Postgraduate Certificate courses is provided in the diagram below.  The courses run annually and start in September/October of each year.

List of modules for the Postgraduate Certificate at the University of Exeter

*For the optional online theory module, learners choose from fully online e-learning courses in Epidemiology, Evidence to Decision: Health Technology Assessment, Health Policy and Resource Allocation, Principles of Primary Care, Statistics as Applied to Health, Clinical Trials, Future Health:Beyond Data, Future Health: Reimagining Systems 

Learners will complete three compulsory modules:

In addition to the three compulsory 15 credit modules, learners will select one optional 15-credit module from the University of Exeter’s menu of health-related master’s level modules.  This will allow learners to start to tailor their programme to an area of clinical research delivery leadership in which they are involved, follow up particular interests or build foundational knowledge, skills and confidence, in topics such as statistics, clinical trials, and epidemiology.

Learners will complete three 20-credit modules:

 

 

The first two are interactive taught modules. The third module is a workplace-based module. This allows acquired skills in leadership in clinical research delivery to be directly applied in the learner’s own work environment under the mentorship of experienced senior clinical researchers.

Master’s Extension Pathways

Learners who have successfully completed the Framework’s Postgraduate Certificate can join the Framework’s Master’s extension pathways at any of the higher education institutions offering courses aligned with the Framework. 

Learners who have successfully completed other Postgraduate Certificates related to clinical research or who have equivalent, evidenced work-based experiential learning may also be able to undertake the Master’s extension pathways without completing the Framework’s Postgraduate Certificate.  This should be discussed with the higher education institution where you want to study.

An overview of the Master’s programmes aligned with the Framework is provided in the diagram below. The Master’s programmes include a Postgraduate Diploma exit award option. The courses run annually and start in September/October each year.

Leadership Specialism - Leadership in Healthcare, Improving Care with Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence, Future Health: Beyond Data, Future Health: Reimagining Systems

Research Methodology Specialism - Statistics as Applied to Health, Clinical Trials, Qualitative Methods

Genomic Medicine Specialism - Fundamentals in Human Genetics and Genomics, Ethical Legal and Social Issues in Applied Genomics, Genomics of Common and Rare Inherited Diseases, Omics Techniques and their application to Genomic Medicine

Public Health Specialism - Structuring and Solving Public Health Problems, Epidemiology, Health Protection, Evidence to Decision 


Learners will complete a 30-credit  workplace placement Advanced Practice Experience Module and two further 15-credit optional online theory modules of their choice from the University of Exeter’s menu of health-related Master’s level modules. This will allow learners to continue to tailor their programme to an area of clinical research delivery leadership in which they are involved, follow up particular interests or build foundational knowledge, skills and confidence. 

Learners wishing to develop a specialist portfolio of learning may elect to select modules representing their chosen specialism.

Learners will complete a 30-credit compulsory module: Research Practice Experience 2. This is a workplace-based module that provides participants with the opportunity for ‘hands on’ clinical research experience in a supervised setting. 

 

In addition, learners will undertake two 15-credit optional online theory modules from a menu. This will allow participants to follow up their personal interests and further develop knowledge and research skills in topics such as clinical leadership, clinical trials, health economics and social research methods.


Specific optional modules are included in the table above. However, learners are able to select from a wider range of relevant options across King’s Health Faculties.

List of modules for the Postgraduate Diploma at the University of Sheffield
















Learners will complete a compulsory 30-credit module: Research Practice Experience 2. This is a workplace-based module that provides learners the opportunity to put their theoretical learning into practice, under the supervision of an experienced clinical researcher. 


The theoretical online modules are: 

Inclusive Research Practice (15 credits theory, online): Explore methods to ensure that access to research, and the benefits of research, is equitable, with a particular emphasis on including populations and people who are historically underserved by research.


Innovative Designs for Research Impact (15 credits theory, online):  Increase the diversity of your practical skills and knowledge in clinical research. Explore how recent innovations and debates in research design and implementation aim to improve the usefulness and impact of research outputs.

Learners will complete a 60-credit independent research project designed to enable them to demonstrate their ability to design, conduct, evaluate and write up a project on a topic appropriate to their area of clinical research delivery.

By electing to complete optional modules from particular specialist topics (Leadership, Research Methodology, Genomic Medicine or Public Health) and completing a relevant Master’s level project, learners completing the full Master’s programme will graduate with an MSc Leading Clinical Research Delivery in one of the specialisms (added in parentheses) following the degree title, should they so choose.

This 60-credit dissertation provides an opportunity to draw on previous research training to plan and successfully carry out a research project under supervision from an established principal investigator and an academic supervisor. Learners will meet with their project supervisors regularly on an individual basis to guide them through the process.

Within this flexible 60-credit dissertation opportunity learners will be encouraged to undertake a substantial personal project. They will work up a concept based on an area of particular interest and/or relevance to themselves and that is rooted in practice.
