The Internship Program is an opportunity to engage in science research, education, and policy training braiding Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) from Native communities with various scientific disciplines. The program encourages participation of Alaska Native students into the sciences and policy research and considers traditions modes of knowledge transfer (stories, song, artistic expression). where interns will engage in geoscience research projects that are place- and community based in collaboration with Native communities. Participants will have the opportunity to build upon multiple scientific paradigms blending science with TK. The program provides an opportunity for interns to incorporate place- & community-based research, while incorporating policy practices at federal and local scales. The REU experience will provide a stipend of $4,800 over ten weeks.

In 2022 the internship will have a modified modality in 2022 due to COVID-19. The program will be offered through hybrid virtual and in person modality ensure safety of interns & mentors. Interns will meet with the mentors to design research projects that may allow them to remain in their home communities while still gaining research experience. Interns will have weekly cohort discussion sessions to promote a sense of community, and will have project blogs to allow them to continue conversations around science research and culture, in addition students may meet with their mentor(s) via zoom. Professional development will be provided via a series of zoom sessions each week to provide scientific writing skills & experience, discussion on policy, best practices working across cultures, & will engage in cross-cultural knowledge sharing. The REU will end with a virtual poster session where interns present their research.
