HOST INFORMATION and FAQ’s

The link to sign up to Host is at the bottom of the page.

Thank you for considering to host an event benefitting the Wildland Firefighter Foundation.  These FAQ's should answer a lot of your questions.

We want to make this as easy as possible for you.  We are going to break it down step by step what you should expect from us and what we need from you.

FAQ's

How does a shooter win?

This shot is tied to our Ultimate Rifle Raffle.  700 tickets are sold for this event.

7 names will be pulled from the 700 raffle tickets sold and put into a finals bucket.

Any shooter that impacts the target on their 1st shot will have their name entered into finals bucket.

What is a Challenge Shot?

If you search YouTube, you will find guys shooting at long distance.  They typically start @ 800 yards and keep going further and further away up to a mile.  They buy in for a small amount of money and whoever impacts it in the least number of shots wins a sticker and a small trophy.  For the most part, it is all about bragging rights.

How and why is this Challenge Shot different?

This Challenge Shot is raising money for the Wildland Firefighter Foundation, and we are giving away a high value prize.  The shooter only gets 1 shot for $100 at the possibility of winning the grand prize or any of the runner up prizes.

Why only 1 shot?

Because even at this distance, a competent shooter can stair step it in for an impact, even with 1 more shot.  I have had a nationally ranked, retired marine recon sniper do this, he missed the 1st shot, barely, and nailed it on the second.  That is why we only allow them to shoot once and not let following shooters watch through optics during the shot, so they cannot gather information that would benefit them.

Has anyone hit it @ 1,000 yards?

Yes, and further. But again, it is extremely rare.

What do I need to do as a Host?

Our recommendation is to time it with another event locally that has a big people draw such as a Rodeo, Concert, a Rally, Race, Shooting event, etc. Folks are coming to town to enjoy themselves; this is another reason for them to come to your event.

Help us promote it locally, online, and mostly social media.

Find a spot where you can safely shoot 1,000 yards.  Make sure you have approval to use the location.  Give yourself plenty of time to set up before shooters start showing up.

Find a buddy to help you. Especially if they have a nice spotting scope.  Hopefully, you have one too.  More than likely the shooters showing up will bring and set up some nice spotting scopes.

You will need to set up and maintain the Target.  Hangers get shot, target gets knocked over, it needs to be painted.  Be prepared. Anything can happen.

Check-In Shooters with the shooter sheets we provide you. (You will have to print them).

Line out and coordinate the shooters on a first come first serve basis.

Ensure all the rules are followed, have a copy of the rules, and brief the shooters on the event rules, and potential rules to your range or site.

Validate every shooter as a hit or miss and let us know at the conclusion of the event.

Logistics, what do I need?

Depending on your location and # of shooters, bare ground can work.  Every site is configured different.

Assess what you will need to make the shoot a success. Consider, water, porta potty, and garbage.

What will I receive as a Host?

You will receive an electric copy of the shooter sheets and the roster of paid participants.

We can take care of building Flyers for your event and get them to you to post up on Social media.

Any items that required to be mailed back we will pay for the postage.

Will I need to take anyone’s Money?

Most shooters will be preregistered and prepaid online.  However, that does not mean you won’t pick up a shooter or three, on the day of the event. You will have blank shooter sheets.  Feel free to take their cash or check made out to the WFF.

As the HOST, can I shoot the Challenge shot?

Yes, as the Host you can shoot.  Because you will be observing all the shots.  You get to shoot first.

How do I set up the Target?

We recommend suspending the Target a few feet off the ground by chains from almost anything, such as preexisting hangers at the Range, A sawhorse, whatever it takes to work.  A contrasting background behind the target helps shooters see the target, such as piece of painted  plywood or steel.

What distance do I set up the Target?

We like to keep it fresh.  We let google pick a number between 1000 and 1,050 yards

What do I have to provide?

If you do not have a square 6"x6" target.  You can purchase one online and we will reimburse you.

Here is an EBay target for $18 and free shipping.  (You may need to copy and paste the link)

If there is something you can acquire for free, like scrap wood to make a stand, and need to purchase something.  Keep a receipt and we will reimburse you.

How do I know what gun and ballistics they are using?

When the shooter checks in, on the Shooter sheet they must input that information on the shooter sheet.  Long Range shooters know their exact load recipe down to the 1/10 of a grain.  You may get the random shooter with factory loads and does not know the specifics.  We are not worried about that guy.  We want to ensure it is a fair playing field for all shooters.  The shooters will definitely help police themselves.

What if someone breaks the Rules?

Use your discretion.  If it is egregious and they are trying to gain an unfair advantage, disqualify them.  If its just an honest mistake, keep within the spirit of the competition.  Again, other shooters will definitely help police the participants.

Is there anything else that can happen at the event?

Shooters like competition and it makes it more enticing if there is an opportunity to win something that day. If you have something to offer, more than likely the shooters will want to partake.   Make it a $20 buy in, possibly a buy back and winner takes all.  If you have the capabilities to do this with your own targets, beer cans, clay pigeons, golf balls, colored rocks, existing range targets, I would advertise it early as an additional event.  That can draw more folks in and of itself.  We can help coordinate that based on the number of shooters that register for your event.

After the shoot, what happens?

Pick up/Clean up and then whatever you want.  Shooters love networking and talking shop.  Others are strictly business and when done shooting hit the road.  Feel free to suggest meeting up at a specific local pub. You can meet them and thank them for supporting the Foundation.

Here are the Rules the Shooters received.
