RESEARCHING WW1 DIGGERS AND NURSES

FROM SUNSHINE COAST REGION OF QUEENSLAND

2014 was the centenary year of Australia's first deployment of soldiers to Europe to fight in the First World War.

The purpose of the Adopt a Digger Project was to commemorate the centenary by honouring the men and women from the (current) Sunshine Coast region of South-east Queensland who served in World War One

Buderim Pioneer Cottage / Buderim Historical Society Inc

The Buderim Historical Society was formed when Sybil Vise generously donated her land and the circa 1882 cottage to the Buderim War Memorial Community Centre (now Buderim War Memorial Community Association BWMCA).

Zelma Dyson saw the potential of this old cottage and contacted Councillor Merv. McLuskie who approached Sybil Vise and made several recommendations to her resulting in her donation. This relic of early life was saved from destructive development and set up as an historical museum in the heart of Buderim, now known as “Pioneer Cottage”.

The BWMCA recommended that an affiliated society be formed to run the property and thus the Historical Society was formed in 1966.

The main objects of the Society are to stimulate interest in the history of Buderim and to maintain Pioneer Cottage, collect and collate information/historic material relating to Buderim.

Membership is available to interested people and it is totally run by volunteers. A management committee is elected each year and sub-committees for fundraising and garden maintenance are active.

Monthly History Network Meetings are held as well as a History Meeting is held with guest speakers on alternate even months.

Friends of Bankfoot House

Bankfoot House, a heritage residence set in the Glass House Mountains, was established along the old Gympie road in 1868 by William and Mary Grigor as a rest stop for the Cobb and Co Coach service between Brisbane and the Gympie goldfields. Three generations of this family occupied the house for over 130 years before the house and all its contents were sold to the Caloundra City Council in 2004. Mr Jack Ferris was the last resident in the house before he passed away in 2002, aged 101.

Friends of Bankfoot House volunteers work at the house one day each week – usually Wednesdays between 9.00am and 4.00pm. Inline with the requirements of House Museums all objects, photos and documents must be properly catalogued and details logged into a Museums database. Down the track this will make the job of locating items easier for researchers and students as well as better managing the overall collection.

Friends have been successful in obtaining various grants to assist in carrying out the weekly tasks at the house and to make the experience more enjoyable. Through these grants we have been able to purchase such items as a computer laptop, a refrigerator and microwave oven. We have also received generous support from the Beerwah Recycling Centre.

New volunteers at the house are always welcome. Volunteers receive training in a range of preservation tasks from the council’s Heritage Officer and from experts in their fields. For example, workshops have been held in Paper Preservation, Textile Preservation, Digital Scanning and Oral History Recording. All of the skills learned are transferable.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer please telephone 5493 0197 or emailfriends@bankfoothouse.org  for more information.

Kenilworth & District Historical Museum prides itself on providing Living History on display.  All items have a story and the volunteer guides are only too willing to take the time to share with visitors the unique history of the district.

The Kenilworth Museum will opens in March after the summer break.

Check the website for more information and make sure you visit their Facebook page which has lots of information on items and family treasures in their collection.

A new brochure on the Kenilworth Historic Walk will be available at the Heritage Discovery Weekend.
