San Marino is a tiny landlocked independent republic situated in the central eastern part of the Italian peninsula, on the borders of the Italian regions of Emilia Romagna and Marche.  It has a total area of about 60.5 square kilometres. The capital city is also called San Marino.  For further details on the country, see the Wikipedia article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Marino.

The entire country is located on an eastern spur of the Apennine mountain chain.  The hills in San Marino are composed of sedimentary rocks (limestones).

The highest point in the country, and its most prominent summit, is De la Fratta (749m), on Monte Titano, located immediately to the east of the capital.  This has a prominence of about 239 metres and is the only summit with a prominence of at least 100 metres in the country.  This is the middle of the three summits on the mountain, and is topped by a tower called Cesta dating back to the 13th Century.
