A Note to Parents and Families

Dear USD 336 Families,

Our school buildings have closed in an effort to stop the spread of coronavirus, and so now we turn to you, our families, to partner with us in the continuing education of our students. We are saddened at the loss of special events and activities that are the hallmarks of the school experience. We feel for our seniors who will miss out on many of their public school "last time" moments. We miss seeing our students' smiling faces each morning. But we have no doubt that out of sadness and suffering, Holton's resilience and commitment to community will shine through.

We want to offer a few tips for our families as you begin to navigate the world of online education. First, this isn't going to be perfect. We are all finding ourselves in an unexpected and challenging situation. Go easy on yourself. No one expects you to become an expert homeschooler overnight. Focus on love, togetherness, and family — and when in doubt, just read a book together.

Next, remember that we are here for you. It's okay if you don't know what an equilateral triangle or a dangling participle is — we are an email or phone call away! Our teachers and staff will continue to be available through the rest of the scheduled school year. Don't hesitate to contact us with any problems you are having, even issues that aren't school related. If we don't have the answers, we will help you find someone who does.

Finally, embrace this as a teachable moment. Perhaps, the most important lesson you can teach your children during this time in history is how to weather a crisis with grace, vulnerability, and courage. Model self-care for your children. Teach them how to share their uncertainties and fears. Show them the value of counting on others and being counted on in a time of need. More than any others, these are the lessons that will stick with our children.

We are here. We are with you. We are in this together. #WeAreHolton.
