Print Resources

The Media Center’s print resources consist of approximately 14,000 books, and in a normal year, we have magazines and newspapers as well. For 2022-23, magazines and newspapers are available online using those links. Information about each follows below. To gain access to our catalog of books, click HERE.

Fiction

The Media Center has a wide selection of fiction books, both hard cover and paperback, including current popular novels, contemporary poetry and short story collections. The fiction section is located in the “Smart Board area.” Fiction books are organized by GENRE first (Realistic Fiction, Fantasy, Historical Fiction, Action/Adventure, Mystery, Horror, Dystopian, Short Stories, Science Fiction, and Novels In Verse), THEN alphabetically by the first 3 letters of the author’s last name. Fiction book call numbers will begin with the prefix FIC.

Biography

Located on the far side of the library, these books are organized by the last name of the person they are about. We have a variety of biographies and autobiographies, as well as collections about groups of people. Biography call numbers will begin with the prefix BIO.

Nonfiction

This is the largest category of books. They are arranged according to the Dewey Decimal system. The Dewey Decimal system organizes information in a way that makes it easily retrievable. Non-fiction books are organized into 10 categories, each divided into ten subcategories. Each book is assigned a “call number” – a locator number – that helps you to find it.

The Non-Fiction collection is where you will go when your teacher requires print resources for research papers in English, History and other classes. Non-fiction book call numbers will begin with numbers, never letters.

How to Locate a Book

  • Do a title, author or keyword search in the online catalog (ask for help if you are uncertain how to use the catalog).

  • Write down the book’s title, author and call number.

  • Remember that certain call numbers have prefixes that will help you determine where the book is located. For example, “FIC” call numbers are located in the fiction area by the Smart Board. Call numbers that begin with numbers rather than letters are located in the non-fiction “stacks” (the shelves opposite the circulation desk). If you can't find something, ASK. We have displays that are rotated, so your book may be in a display!

  • Non-fiction books are located along the "outer perimeter" of the library. They are categories by numerical and then alphabetical order, according to the Dewey Decimal classification for that particular book.

If you are still having trouble locating a book – please ask for help!

Policies:Students may borrow up to 3 books for a period of 3 weeks. Books may be renewed by logging on to the catalog. Students can logon to the catalog by clicking on the “logon” button on the upper right of the screen and typing in the same logon protocol as when logging on to a school computer.
Please remember that borrowing books is a privilege. Borrowing privileges will be suspended if a book is overdue or if it is damaged. Damaged or lost books must be paid for: students may purchase a replacement copy or pay the Media Specialist for the cost of the book (a receipt will be provided).
To assist with locating them, books are divided into several different categories. This determines how they are used and where they are located.
