Yogendra Puranik, Born in India 03-Jun-1977  | プラニク・ヨゲンドラ, 197年6月3日インド生まれ 

Yogendra Puranik, popularly known as Yogi, was born in Ambarnath, located in the suburbs of Mumbai, India, on June 3, 1977. After completing his basic education in India, he first came to Japan as a recipient of government scholarships in 1997 and 1999. He migrated to Japan in 2001 and worked for large-scale global IT companies and Japanese banks in senior positions. During this time, he contributed to the community as a volunteer. He operates a couple of restaurants and a culture center in Tokyo. He was elected to the Tokyo Edogawa assembly in 2019 and took over as a Gazetted Civil Services officer at the Government of Ibaraki in April 2022. He took over as the Principal of the historic and famous Tsuchiura First Public High School in April 2023 and as the Leader of the Educational DX team of Ibaraki prefecture in June 2024. 

よぎは、1977年6月3日、インド・ムンバイ市近郊のアンバーナスで生まれ育ち、プネ大学から学士を取得。1997年と1999年に国費留学生として来日。2001年に社会人として来日しグローバル大手IT企業、日系銀行で働き、幹部職を経験。同時に多文化共生に向けて、また災害対策としてボランティア活動を行った。東京でソーシャル起業家として飲食店２つと文化センターを経営。2019年に日本初のアジア出身の議員として江戸川区議に当選し、2022年4月に茨城県で民間人校長(日本初のインド出身管理職公務員)として採用された。2023年4月に茨城県立土浦第一高等学校に就任し、2024年6月に茨城県校務DXチームの座長に就任した。

Yogi has created history in Japan. He is the first-ever India-born Asian-origin MLA, the first-ever Indian-origin Gazetted civil services officer, the first-ever foreign-origin public school principal, the first-ever and only living Indian-origin person mentioned in a school textbook (alongside Hon PM HE Narendra Modi), and the first-ever Indian-origin person to be appointed as Special Duty 1-day superintendent of police in Japan. He is the tallest flag bearer and promoter of India in Japan. 

Yogi has broken multiple barriers for the immigrant community in Japan. Given his experiences and knowledge in several fields, people call Yogi a walking institute. Yogi received the Jagtik Marathi Bhushan Award 2024 from the Honorable Chief Minister of Maharashtra, His Excellency Eknath Shinde. He also received the Best Global Educator Award 2023 from the Honorable Mauritian President, His Excellency Prithvirajsing Roopun. 

よぎは日本である意味歴史を作ってきました。彼はインド生まれアジア系の日本初の議員であり、日本初のインド系管理職公務員であり、日本初の外国出身公立学校長であり、彼については高校の政治経済の副教材及び歴史総合の副教材にも記載があります。インド出身者として日本初一日警察署長にも任命されました。彼は日本ではもっとも有名なインド系移民であります。よぎは日本の移民コミュニティのさまざまな障壁を打ち破ってきました。よぎは多くの分野における知識と経験があって、人々はよぎのことをウォーキング百科事典と呼びます。よぎは、マハラシュトラ州のエクナス・シンデ州首相閣下より2024年グローバル州民栄誉賞を受賞しました。また、モーリシャス大統領プリトヴィラージシン・ループン閣下より2023年最優秀グローバル教育者賞も受賞しました。

Yogi is an inspiring educator and a pioneer in setting up voluntary Japanese, Hindi, and Sanskrit classes in Tokyo, with local Japanese and Indian teachers since 2007. Yogi delivers lectures to ministries, over 50 universities, schools, and companies, impacting the lives of thousands. He usually speaks on ‘Know India Know Indians’, ‘Inclusion’, ’Future of education', etc. He has delivered around 50 lectures at Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

よぎはインスピレーションを与える教育者であり、2007 年以来、地元の日本人とインド人の教師とともに、東京で日本語、ヒンディー語、サンスクリット語の教室を立ち上げた先駆者です。よぎは省庁、50 以上の大学、学校、企業で講義を行っており、何千もの人々の生活に影響を与えています。彼は通常、「インドを知る、インド人を知る」、「多文化共生」などについて講演しています。日本の外務省でも約 50 回の講義を行っています。

Yogi has helped people while managing his family and professional responsibilities. Despite his senior positions and busy schedule, he has never hesitated to go out of his way to support the people in need. His community work in Japan since 2005 is groundbreaking. His work during the 2011 Great Eastern Japan earthquake, typhoons in 2019, and the coronavirus pandemic of 2019 is widely appreciated by the community and the media, winning the trust of Indians, Japanese, and other nationals in Japan.

よぎは家族と職業上の責任を果たしながら、人々を助けてきました。職場でも上級職にあり多忙なスケジュールにもかかわらず、人々を助けるためにどんなことでもやりました。2005 年以来、日本で行っている彼のコミュニティ活動は画期的なものです。2011年の東日本大震災、2019年の台風、そして2020～21年のコロナウイルス感染症における彼の活動は、コミュニティやメディアから広く評価され、インド人、日本人、その他の在日国民の信頼を獲得することにつながりました。

Yogi is a familiar face in Japanese television, newspapers, and magazines. His profound social work has been covered by Japanese national television since 2008. He is the only Indian, or possibly the only foreigner in Japan, whose one-hour solo interviews and documentaries have been telecast on Japanese national television and radio, on multiple occasions. The national broadcaster NHK released a 1-hour documentary on Yogi in March 2023, which was telecast nationally 7 times, due to its high rating.

よぎは日本のテレビ、新聞、雑誌でおなじみの人です。彼の深遠な社会活動は、2008 年から日本のテレビで取り上げられています。彼の１時間の単独インタビューやドキュメンタリーが何度も全国テレビやラジオで放映されています。国営放送NHKは2023年3月に彼の1時間のドキュメンタリーを公開し、高評価のため全国で7回放映しました。

Promoting Indian Culture in Japan

Yogi runs the Edogawa India Culture Center (EICC) in Edogawa City of Tokyo, just 20 minutes from central Tokyo Station.  The EICC boasts a hall with a seating capacity of over 70 to promote India's history and culture in Japan. The hall features Indian attire, musical instruments, a large wooden altar adorned with a 75-kg, 8-metal Ganesha idol crafted using traditional Indian techniques, and numerous other Indian artifacts. 

The center hosts weekly classes for yoga, music, languages, etc. Japanese and Indian teachers come together to offer the classes. The center offers live events of traditional music and dances, collaborating with culture and performers from India, Japan, and many other countries. The center has organized 170+ events to date. 

インド文化と歴史の普及活動

よぎは都内にて、東京駅から電車で20分の距離で江戸川印度文化センターを運営しています。江戸川印度文化センターのホール（約90平米）とは約70人のスペースがあって、インドの文化や歴史を伝承しています。江戸川印度文化センターのホールでは、テーブル・椅子50客、プロジェクター、大画面モニター、ホワイトボード、大型木彫り祭壇、インドの民族衣装などを用意し、年中に渡り複数の交流活動を実施。 

Promoting Indian food in Japan

It all began in August 2012, when Yogi's mother, Rekha, visited her son Yogi and grandson Chinmay, who were living in Tokyo, Japan. During the visit, both Yogi and Rekha were down with a bout of influenza that lasted nearly 10 days. As they struggled to recover, they faced an unexpected challenge, finding simple, nourishing Indian food for young Chinmay. Back then, Tokyo’s neighborhood only offered the standard fare, naan and butter chicken, but nothing that resembled the warm, homely meals of India.

While resting in bed, Rekha and Yogi began to dream. What if there was a place in Tokyo that served the kind of food Indian mothers lovingly prepare at home? Fresh, light, soulful meals, just like back in India. That dream soon turned into a mission. And so was born “Indian Home Food Restaurant Reka”, under the banner of Reka Corporation, a name inspired by Rekha’s own. From that heartfelt beginning, Reka has grown into a beloved name in Tokyo's Indian culinary landscape. Today, Reka operates two unique restaurants, one (in Kasai, Tokyo) serving authentic Indian home-style, simple, wholesome meals, and the other one ( in Nishi Kasai, Tokyo) serving India's famous street food, offering bold flavors and nostalgic bites. At Reka, every dish tells a story of home, healing, and heritage.

日本で広がるインド家庭料理の魅力

すべては2012年8月、東京に住む息子よぎと孫のちんめいを訪ねて、レカ氏が日本を訪れたことから始まりました。その滞在中、よぎとレカは10日間にも及ぶインフルエンザにかかってしまい、体調の回復に苦しむ中、思いがけない問題に直面しました。それは、小さなちんめいのために体に優しいシンプルなインドの家庭料理を見つけることができなかったことです。当時、周辺では、ナンやバターチキンといった定番メニューはあるものの、母の手料理のような温かく素朴な味わいの料理はほとんどありませんでした。

病床で休む中、レーカとヨギはある夢を描き始めました。「もし東京に、インドの母が心を込めて作るような、フレッシュで軽やかで、心まで満たされる料理を提供する場所があったら——」。その夢はすぐに使命へと変わり、レカ自身の名前に由来する「合同会社レカ・コーポレーション」の基で「印度家庭料理店レカ」が誕生しました。こうして生まれたレカ店は、今では東京におけるインド料理の代表的存在となり、2つの個性豊かなレストランを展開しています。 東京・葛西にある本店では、インドの家庭の味そのままの、シンプルで体にやさしい料理を提供。東京・ 西葛西の店舗では、インドのストリートフードをテーマに、スパイシーで懐かしい味をお楽しみいただけます。レーカの料理は、どれも「家庭」「癒し」「伝統」の物語を語ります。

Promoting cricket in Japan

Yogi loves sports and takes an interest in all kinds of sports. In his school days, he used to play football and cricket and also took part in athletics. He was also fond of kho-kho, a traditional Indian sport that tests physical and mental excellence. In Japan, he learned and played table tennis and also won tournaments. Yogi has been one of the founding members of the Seishincho Cricket Club (SCC) in Tokyo since 2006. Today, SCC is a huge club with more than 60 active players. SCC club has four teams, out of which Yogi owns one named Yogi's Bashers. SCC organizes the annual T10  tournament in Tokyo. SCC itself has won many tournaments in Japan. 

日本におけるクリケットの普及活動

よぎは小さい頃からスポーツに興味を持っており、学校時代にはクリケット、サッカーや陸上で活躍していました。学校内外の大会での優勝経験もあります。インド古来のコーコーというスポーツにも関心を持っていました。たいっ力と思考力の両方を試すスポーツです。来日してからよぎは卓球を習い、地域の大会で活躍しました。そして、都内の清新町クリケットクラブ(SCC)を設立し、2006年からプレーしています。今、SCCには60人超の現役選手がいて、クラブ内で４つのチームに分かれて運営していますが、その一つのチームはよぎがオーナーなっています。SCCはT10大会を毎年開催し、クリケットを盛り上げています。
