In a sprawling squatter village in 1960s Lai Chi Kok, the beautiful Ma Sheung-ha is in love with factory worker Ying-kit, but a heavy cloud hangs over their future. Years ago, when faced with a financial crisis, Sheung-ha's father borrowed money the wealthy landowner To Chi-wah and signed a contract promising to marry his daughter to Mr To's son to settle the debt. Now, the time for repayment has come. Mr. To sends marriage broker Madame Kay to pressure the Ma family, demanding that Sheung-ha marry his rather simple-minded younger son, Wai-kit.
