The original St. Elizabeth was "located on a low bluff on the southeast bank of the Osage River, less than a mile upstream from the mouth of the Big Tavern Creek." This original town failed and a decision was made to establish a "new town on higher and healthier ground."

The plat of the town was filed in 1880. The people wanted to change the name of the new town from St.Elizabeth to St. Lawrence, but the postmaster said it was too close to the name Lawrenceton. The townspeople then decided upon Charles-Town, but the postmaster said that was too close to Charleston. - information obtained from A Trip to Charleytwon: The German American Community at St. Elizabeth, Missouri 1880-1920 (2006) by Dale Doerhoff.
