Pontus is generally the name of the geographical area - which is also a historical area - of the NE. coast of Asia Minor, the coastal region of Cappadocia, east of Paphlagonia, which today belongs to Turkey.
In ancient times, Pontus was a field of intense Greek colonization and also a kingdom under Mithridates. In the late Byzantine period, it re-emerged as an independent state. Until 1923 and the mandatory exchange of populations that followed at the behest of the Treaty of Lausanne, it was inhabited, in a significant percentage, by Greek-speaking Christian populations for the most part and Muslim populations in the second degree.
