postdoctoral scholar at Caltech
I will be joining the School of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University as an Assistant Professor in January 2026.
I am currently a postdoc and Resnick scholar in the Mechanical and Civil Engineering Department at Caltech, working with Prof. Kaushik Bhattacharya and Prof. Ruby Fu. I received my Ph.D. degree from Carnegie Mellon University, where I was advised by Prof. Matteo Pozzi and Prof. Kaushik Dayal.
My research lies at the intersection of computational science and applied mathematics. I'm interested in developing theoretical and computational approaches and integrating mechanical models with statistical learning methods to simulate complex engineering systems. My research focuses on mechanics of porous materials, fluid transport, solid-fluid interactions, and thermo-chemo-mechanical coupling with applications ranging from geomaterials for subsurface water transport, energy storage and production to soft biological materials.
At Purdue, my lab will have multiple funded PhD positions starting in Fall 2026. If you are interested in exploring the intersection of computational mechanics and scientific machine learning, please contact me at karimi2@purdue.edu.
