Special Topics

The following issues will be published in 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024.

2021: Exploring the Intersections of Western and Non-Western Music Traditions

The Journal of Undergraduate Research in Music is thrilled to announce its first special topic issue! JURM recognizes that the curriculum implemented by most Western institutions of classical music prioritizes the reproduction of European music rather than introducing and developing a wider understanding and incorporation of non-Western techniques and styles. This first issue aims to circulate exceptional research while promoting and encouraging undergraduate students to explore research themes outside of the European canon.

2022: Antiracism in Music Pedagogy

Our second special issue will center on pedagogical applications of antiracism in music teaching. JURM recognizes the immense strides educators have made in decolonizing curriculums and would therefore like to create a space for the exceptional research done by the next generation of teachers. We hope that this issue will uplift students focused on developing a wider understanding of non-Western techniques and styles in their classrooms and provide helpful pedagogical strategies for classes of all ages.
