2022 CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Submit your work for a chance to be published in the 2022 issue of JURM!

JURM recognizes the prioritization of the Western canon in music education and will review research on topics within the canon. However, JURM also recognizes the lack of education on topics outside the canon and aims to encourage and create space for students interested in research dedicated to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion in music. Let your voice be heard!

Submitting to JURM will allow you to make connections with other undergraduate students with similar interests, while disseminating your own research in the field. Submitting also provides an opportunity to receive feedback from a team of editors and learn more about publishing in academia. We welcome and encourage works from first-year authors!

Who can submit?

  • JURM accepts submissions written by undergraduate students currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution.

  • JURM accepts submissions written by graduate students if submissions were written during an undergraduate course of study.

What do we accept?

JURM accepts any of the following works:

    • Articles

    • Research papers

    • Essays

    • Theses (e.g. capstone thesis)

    • Proposals for colloquies

    • Video and/or audio submissions

Formatting Specifics for Written Submissions

  • Submissions must be in .docx files. PDFs and links to Google Documents will not be accepted.

  • There is a 2000-word (main text) minimum and an 8000-word (main text) maximum. Works that do not fall within these parameters may be appealed.

  • Authors must submit an abstract (250-300 words) and keywords.

  • Works must follow the Chicago/Turabian Ninth Edition author-date format. Works submitted in any other citation format will not be considered.

  • If authors choose to use examples, they should embed them into the paper body. In Chicago-Turabian style, figure headings should be placed below the embedded example unless the example is sheet music, in which case the figure caption is placed above the example.

  • Authors should include section headings.

  • Please remove any identifying information.

Formatting Specifics for Video or Audio Submissions

  • Please remove any identifying information.

  • A script (including in-text citations and a reference list in Chicago Turabian Ninth Edition author-date format) must be submitted. The script should be written in such a way that the in-text citations make sense to say out loud in context.

Example: “Process completion is probably the most familiar of our categories, so we'll start there. The general idea behind process completion is in line with what Kofi Agawu (1991) has called the beginning-middle-ending paradigm: some process starts, is worked out, then comes to a kind of conclusion.” In-text citations could be read like "Kofi Agawu 1991" or "Kofi Agawu in 1991." (This example was provided by Dr. John Peterson, James Madison University.)

  • If your submission is a podcast episode or other audio, upload your audio file and your script.

  • If your submission is a PowerPoint presentation with a video component, upload your slides, audio file (no video), and script.

  • There is a 10-minute minimum and 20-minute maximum duration for video and audio submissions. Works that do not fall within these parameters may be appealed.

  • Video and audio submissions selected for publication will be uploaded as a YouTube video to the JURM YouTube page.

Appeal Requests

  • Authors whose work does not fit one of these guidelines (e.g. word count or presentation duration) may submit an appeal request.

If your work is selected for publication, identifying information will be returned to written and media materials.

Submission and Process Expectations

JURM accepts submissions on a rolling basis. This means that research will be published on an individual timeline as the editing process is completed to the author's and editor's satisfaction. Final drafts must be received by March 1, 2023 in order to be published in the 2022 publication. It is the author's responsibility to remain in contact with their editor and the JURM staff until they have produced a final draft. If any communication issues arise, please contact Managing Editor Joe Jaxson (jurmusic21@gmail.com). Specific timelines are to be communicated between the author, editor, and the JURM staff.
