end the genocide of the uyghur people
Dear (name of lawmaker),
Over one million people have been placed into camps in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China, targeted because of their ethnicity and religion (they’re predominantly Uyghur Muslims). Uyghur families are torn apart, as parents are sent to the camps and children are taken away to state orphanages.
A recent report by the US Commission on International Religious Freedom on Covid-19 states that the limited access to medical resources in the camps, combined with the concentration of elderly detainees there, could lead to a humanitarian disaster. With so many people in such close proximity, the camp’s conditions are conducive to the spread of coronavirus.
We cannot pretend this isn’t happening – the US government must stand with Uyghur people and all those detained in China.
As my representative, I ask that you urge the US government to declare what is happening to the Uyghur Muslims in China a genocide. By forcing sterilization, torturing, raping, and killing Uyghurs, the People’s Republic of China has clearly violated the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Following the determination of genocide, I urge you to encourage the United States government to try and punish the offenders, in addition to providing aid to those affected.
Please take action to end the genocide occurring in Xinjiang and defend innocent lives.
