1. Paperbacks - Mark Goulden - Tarzan

=======================================================================================

In the late 1920 and early 30s Newnes and Ransome both published three Tarzan titles in cheap paperbacks. Both publishers used covers by 'Harry Woolley' (see images above). 'A Gelli' is also thought to have illustrated some.

It wasn't until 1949 that Mark Goulden published the Tarzan titles shown here, these are thought to be the first unabridged paperback editions to appear in the UK.

Mark Goulden bought the publishing house, W H Allen and published 'Lost Empire' and 'Lord of the Jungle' in 1949. The books were not of high quality, being printed on cheap paper and side stapled because of the Government's restrictions after the war owing to paper shortage. Cover illustrations were varied, some from the hardback originals and other repainted US illustrations, however some were original covers by J. E. McConnell. There were also issues with repainted covers from other books. It is clear that the illustration on 'Land of Terror' ended up as the cover of 'The Return of Tarzan' (see below). (ERBANIA 90)

See also the item on the 'corrections & additions' page.

Several titles were in fact first UK editions. See https://sites.google.com/site/erburroughsuk1steditions/home for full list of these.

Below are a few of the covers for the Tarzan titles they published with dates and cover artists when known. Over the later period the books became issued as Pinnacle Books and the quality improved as paper restrictions were relaxed. Goulden published four Tarzan title in 1958/9 and then ceased to trade. In all they published 22 Tarzan titles (All available apart from the two Tarzan Twins novels) Below are just 12 of the best.
