Localities
The Red River is about seven miles long and in the past tin mining played a huge part in the valley's history. With the cessation of tin streaming activities in the 1960s the valley has been gradually transformed by Nature and is now mostly a Local Nature Reserve with walks revealing interesting plants, animals, birds and insects.
Dromona, an oasis by the Red River with its large garden, is a natural home for wildlife including butterflies, squirrels and birds, woodpeckers, Jays, Bullfinches, and every summer the scarce Spotted Flycatcher. We have been interested in wildlife for many years and are always willing to give advice on walks and reserves. Members of Cornwall Wildlife Trust.
The site of Dromona dates back to the end of the 17th century and has had a history of literary connections. In the 1930s the Irish scholar Stephen Mackenna, well-known as the translator of the Greek philosopher Plotinus, lived here. Later, in the 1950s it was the home of William John Burley, the author of the Cornish detective books (and TV series) called Wycliffe.
A mile away, the Coastal Footpath runs along the scenic North Cliffs (Heritage Coast and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) to the harbour and beach town of Portreath and in the other direction to Gwithian with its dunes and three mile long beach - surfing, swimming, seal and dolphin watching. Carn Brea, the hill which dominates the local skyline. has marvellous views and a castle.
We are well sited for touring West Cornwwall. Nearby are Camborne & Redruth with shops, amenities and mining heritage sites, Tehidy Country Park with a lake, cycling and walking trails, Tehidy Golf Course, Pool with its leisure centre, boot sales and shops. Not far away, there is Stithians Reservior with wind surfing, boating, walks, Truro cathedral city, county museum, pannier market and shops, Falmouth port and harbour, National Maritime Museum, beaches and river trips and Pendennis Castle, St Ives famous artists' colony, beaches and home of the Tate Modern art gallery. Further afield, the Eden Project and the Lizard Peninsula with Kynance Cove.
