Iaido Grading Syllabus

Kuniba Ryu Iaido

These requirements are set up to be a guideline for the beginners of Kunibaryu Iaido. If the student already have some experience in Iaido in others styles the timeframe can look different for the grading. It is the branch chief of each country who decides the promotion in consultant with the European branch head about the promotions. Each promotion will be given a japanese menjo authentic for Chikubukai Kunibaryu Iaido under the supervision of Soke Bill Price USA home head quarter Chikubukai International. This menjo will be underwritten by the Iaido and Kobudo European president Kyoshi Johan Backteman and the branch head in the country that is conducting the tests.

Sho-kyu (1st level yellow belt)

  • Basic dachi with the Bokken (see kata).

  • Basic terminology(see the wordlist)

The basic parts of the sword:

  • Shinken(blade)

  • Tsuka(handle)

  • Tsuba(protector)

  • Saia( fold)

  • Sageo( string)

Kihon: From Happo no giri.

Katas: Happo no kamae, Happo no giri.

Minimum practice: 3 months regularly 3 times/week.

Chiu-Kyu (2nd level green belt)

  • History of Mugairyu Iaido and the link to Kunibaryu Iaido established.

Kihon: From yellow belt but better quality. Kihon moving back and forth.

Kumite: 5 ippon kumite with rubber Bokken. (Alternative 5 ippon kumite with the Bokken).

Example uke performs yodan strike and uke blocks ganmen uchi then strikes.

*Block and attack 5 different.

Katas: Shin, Ren and Sa. Bunkai from these kata.

Minimum practice: 12 months regurly 3 times/week.

Jo-Kyu Ho (3rd level brown belt)

Kihon: is testet with more combinations in a flow. Parts from Happo no giri can be used and mixed with other types of strikes and cutting like nukisuke and uchi in different directions.

Kumite: 10 ippon kumite with rubber Bokken or 10 ippon kumite with Bokken.

Kata: Ju and Sya. Bunkai from these kata.

Minimum practice: 18 months regularly 3 times/week.

Shodan Ho

  • Knowledge of the history of the samurai arts. Knowledge of how to take care of the sword and keep it clean.

Kihon: On a higher level of perfection. Wrists and angles are established. Knees and feet positions are good. Basic knowledge of the Katana and the Iaito.

Kumite: 5 jiu kumite(free) with the Bokken(the uke attacks freely and the semete blocks.

  • Control and focus is the main key. Keep the control! Bokken accident is dangerous.

Kata: Hibiki, Hibiki gaeshi and Riken. Bunkai from these kata.

Minimum practice: 24 months regularly 3 times/week.

Shodan (1st dan)

All above requirements are good. Having instructors skill to teach others.

Kumite: 5 jiu kumite with block and counterattack with the Bokken.

Kata: Riken gaesh, Tsuki-age.

Minimum practice: 36 months regularly 3 times/week.

Nidan

  • All above requirements good. Part time instructor.

Kumite: 5 bunkai from any of kata 1-10 practised on demand.

Kata: Makko, Nuki uchi and Zen go nukiuchi.

Minimum practice: 5 years

Sandan

  • Masters grade. Good standard of behavior. Role model for students.

Kata: Sanpo and Shiho.

Minimum practice: 8 years.

* Kata remained to learn during the path: Sen Go Sen, Riken Omote, Anza, Anza Gaeshi, Anza riken.

Higher Dan grades will be promoted by Soke and the Shihan board of Chikubukai International in cooperation with the Hombu of Europe Chikubukai.
