HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The Surigao del Norte College of Agriculture and Technology (SNCAT) was founded as Mainit National High School by virtue of Republic Act 5256 on May 26, 1969. Its founding was made possible through the efforts of the Representative of Surigao del Norte, the Hon. Contantino C. Navarro, Sr. It was formally opened in school year 1972-1973 as the Mainit National Agricultural School (MNAS).

The present school site was acquired through a Deed of Donation executed by the then Surigao del Norte Provincial Governor, Hon. Jose C. Sering. The school which stands in the old provincial Nursery in Magpayang, in is the center of three progressive municipalities namely, Mainit, Tubod and Alegria.

The history of SNCAT is a story od consistent growth and ever-increasing standards. It was converted into college in March 21, 1983 by virtue of Batas Pambansa Blg. 358 “An act converting the Mainit National Agricultural School in the Municipality of Mainit, province of Surigao del Norte, into College of Agriculture and Technology to be known as the SURIGAO DEL NORTE COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY and appropriating funds therefore”.

Since 1972 when it was created as agricultural school, it regularly offers technical courses and skills training services aside from its usual instruction, production, extension and research functions.

As a lone agri-fishery college in the province of Surigao del Norte, SNCAT is very instrumental in catering the training needs of agri-fishery and agro-tourism-industrial fields.

In a bid to take part in the strengthening of the Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET), SNCAT opted to be with Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) by offering more technical courses that are responsive to the needs of the farmers, fisher folks and other constituents of the community. SNCAT is under TESDA by virtue of RA 9162 otherwise known as the General Appropriations Act of 2002.

To complement the mismatch labor supply in the local and global market, the college readily prepared its trainer’s to deliver the Competency-Based Training of instruction and is now ready to implement the program of the administration catering free assessment and certification ensuing job ready TVET graduates.

Finally, SNCAT has the full responsibility in carrying out the task of TESDA as embodied in the Republic Act 8435 (Agriculture and Fishery Modernization Act of 1997) and the implementation of the proposed K-12 Program of the Department of Education (DepEd).
