This July, year 4 were visited by Caitlin and Kate from TEC Girls, who led a STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) workshop for us. First of all, they introduced themselves, and then they told the children about what STEM is, as well as t explaining the different careers that the children could pursue when they got older. After this, the children began the science part of the workshop, where they discussed the environment and the different ways that we could help to preserve it. They were then set the task of designing a poster to show their ideas, and in order to make it eye-catching, they would be creating simple circuits in order to add a light to it.

For the second part of the workshop, the children were tasked with making a stop motion animation in support of their poster. They were given time to storyboard their animation and plan what they wanted to achieve. Then they had to make their set and props. Finally they shot their animation using Stop Motion Studio. They had to think carefully about how they would position their camera as well as how they would move their props to ensure that the transitions between photos was smooth. They had so much fun while learning some awesome things in science and computing and they can’t wait to see the TEC Girls again.
