This walk starts from the Gettysburg YWCA. ***** Do you want a walk that does NOT visit the battlefields? If so, this walk is for you! My wife wanted a route that explores the current-day Gettysburg including its quaint downtown with buildings of unique and historical architecture, the town's eateries and shops and other locations of interest. Check out a different side of Gettysburg, PA through the eyes of my amazing wife.

From the square in Gettysburg go south on Baltimore St. (Bus. 15 S., PA 116 W.) 1 block to Middle St.Turn right on Middle St. (PA 116 W.) and go 7/10 mile, passing traffic signals at Washington St., Franklin St, West St., and Confederate Ave./Seminary Ridge. The YWCA driveway is 1/10 mile past Confederate Ave. on the right.

Description:

Mon-Fri, 4:30 am-10pm; Sat, 8-5; Sun, 10-5 Closed all holidays. Tour Operators please make arrangements with the POC. After registering, you must drive to the start at the parking lot for the National Cemetery. ***** There are two 5K trails; either trail may be done for 5K credit. BOTH TRAILS ARE NEW FOR 2019! Both trails must be done for 10K credit.*****The 5K Town Trail goes through the Soldiers' National Cemetery, around Colt Park, past the stores and restaurants on Steinwehr Ave and through the Cemetery Annex. The 5K Battlefield Trail goes past the "Highwater Mark" area of the battlefield, the Pennsylvania Monument, and past some of the artillery positions on Day 2 and 3. It then goes to the Visitor's Center and returns to the start, gong past General Meade's Headquarters. ***** There are no restrooms at the parking area; restrooms on the Town Trail are passed within 1K of starting. Restrooms on the Battlefield Trail are passed about 2.6K and 4K after starting.

If you are visiting Gettysburg and only have time to do one of the three YREs, this is the one we recommend. ****** Pets are not allowed inside the Gettysburg National Cemetery but you can do a detour and avoid the cemetery****The "A" Award is a 4" patch featuring the 1st Minnesota Monument which is on the 5K Battlefield Trail.

Description:

Mon-Fri, 4:30 am-10pm; Sat, 8-5; Sun, 10-5. Closed all holidays. Tour Operators please make arrangements with the POC. Pets cannot enter the National Cemetery. ***** After registering for the 5K & 10K, you must drive about three miles to the start at the Longstreet Monument/Amphitheater. The 15K starts from the YWCA.***** The 5K Confederate Artillery Trail is and out and back on West Confederate Ave and focuses on the Confederate artillery units that supported Pickett's Charge on July 3, 1863. The 5K Horse Trail loops utilizes a portion of the horse trail and roads in the area of the Amphitheater and the Peach Orchard. The 15K trail starts from the YWCA and goes on the Confederate line on Seminary Ridge, past the Peach Orchard and Wheatfield, on the Union line on Cemetery ridge, through the National Cemetery, site of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, and the South and West areas of Gettysburg. ***** The trails are on paved park roads, park trails, road shoulders, and city sidewalks. The 5K Horse Trail is dirt and gravel and is not suitable for wheel chairs and strollers will have some difficulty.

There is a link to the "pool schedule" at www.ywcagettysburg.org . Look for the "Lap Swim Schedule". Generally, it is from 6 am - 9 pm on M to F, 8 am - 4:30 pm on Sat, and 10 am - 4:30 pm on Sunday. Check the schedule as the pool closes occasionally for maintenance, swim meets, classes, swim team practice, etc.***** The swim will be six laps the length of the pool. The YWCA does not provide towels or locks for the wall lockers.

In addition to the $3 fee for IVV credit, there is an $8 fee paid to the YWCA for the daily pass. The YWCA no longer has their Community Swim on Sat and Sun afternoons but there is no fee to use the YWCA facilities after noon on the third Saturday of each month. The POC has five guest passes that will be given to Volksswimmers. You must contact the POC at least two days in advance.

Mon-Fri, 4:30 am-10pm; Sat, 8-5; Sun, 10-5 Closed most holidays. This trail starts at the YWCA. The 26K route is a figure 8 on paved roads around and through the Battlefield and Gettysburg. The 15K route is only half of the figure 8. The 26K route covers most of the major parts of the battlefield and bicycling is an excellent way to tour the battlefield. The 15K route is only thru parts of the battlefield for the first day of the battle and the Spangler Spring/Culps Hill/East Cemetery Hill parts of the battlefield from the second day. You will be bicycling with vehicular traffic

The Gettysburg Battlefield is dominated by hills (Seminary Ridge, Culp's Hill, Little Round Top, etc) and the bike route goes up the hills. Helmets must be worn. ***** the "A" Award is a 4" patch featuring the 1st Minnesota Monument which is passed on the 26K route for the bike ride.
