Place in History - One of the most respected workers of the 1990s, Ultimo Dragon did such remarkable things as a junior heavyweight that he is now in a very elite class. One of those men would be his idol, Tiger Mask, whom he followed closely stylistically by training in Japan and Mexico. Like Gran Hamada before him, Yoshihiro Asai was deemed too small for Japanese junior heavyweights, but fit in amongst lucha libre middleweights and welterweights. He was so good that Hamada returned to Japan and brought in the first lucha group and Asai was the company's darling star. He would return to Mexico under a hood as El Último Drágon. The Antonio Peña created gimmick made him more than just another young talent as he was hitting his prime as a worker. During his peak he wrestled an almost inhuman schedule considering his style and the diversity of where he was wrestling. In Mexico, he maintained his status as one of the best talents in the country. In Japan, Dragon was arguably the hottest talents around in period where the juniors were highly competitive. In the United States, his unique style got him over with the fans and he was easily one of WCW's best wrestlers in the few years he was there. His holding of ten titles was an unprecedented feat and a testament to his worldliness. After a botched surgery, Ultimo stepped to the sidelines and concentrated on training students in Mexico and starting Toryumon in Japan. The first few classes were exceptional and Dragon proved to be one of the most accomplished trainers in the world. In his later classes, he and luchador Skayde created a whole new style that the kids were the masters of it. While the T2P promotion was short-lived its disciples lived on in Toryumon (later to become "Dragon Gate"). After mounting an in-ring comeback, Ultimo Dragon negotiated a contract with the WWE and had an uneventful year before returning to touring Japan and Mexico. Ultimo Dragon is now in his mid-forties and continues to do some wrestling, some training and his influence within the puroresu scene is tremendous when you look at the rosters of various companies. Ultimo Dragon is a man who lived two lives in pro-wrestling. First was as one of the greatest junior heavyweight wrestlers of all-time who combined puroresu and lucha libre to innovate an exciting and dynamic style. Second was as a successful trainer and promoter who helped dozens of successful wrestlers break in and his company became the foundation of one of Japan's most successful indy companies.
