Place in History - In the 1970s there were few international draws in the league of Mil Mascaras. He was an instant hit in Mexico with his incredible physique and big push by way of getting the rub from the top stars of the 1960s. An innovative character with exceptional charisma, Mil Mascaras would take his show on the road and find unparalleled success. He headed North and was huge in the Spanish-speaking cities in the US. So much so that the IWA jumped behind him as a world champion in the late 1970s, though that didn't work in the States as a whole. Mascaras was a larger-than-average luchador and introduced the unique Mexican style to American fans. He remains the most successful luchador to date and even though he has not done anything in the US in years, many still remember him. While his look and style worked somewhat in the States it wasn't that simple in Japan. There Mascaras would have to get it done in the ring and he was paired with a great worker and fellow masked wrestler - The Destroyer. The feud was a blend of slick matwork and lucha flair, which the fans ate right up. Mascaras would forever live off the matches's success in Japan. His status in Mexico continued and he is still doing big main events and its all due to his selfishness. People often criticize Mascaras for his ego, but he is the country's biggest international star, in fact the few that can rival him are of recent times and are usually American-borns. A great career and a one-of-a-kind man makes Mil Mascaras a true legend of lucha libre and pro-wrestling around the world.
