Place in History - In the summer of 1987, Hercules Ayala, an established top babyface in Puerto Rico saw the potential to become a much bigger star.  He turned heel on Carlos Colon and became embroiled in a feud that was between two native stars unlike any feud before.  Hercules Ayala’s career up to that point was quite different than many other Puerto Ricans.  He had left the island as a youngster to live in Boston and broke into pro-wrestling there.  While he did return and worked on the island, he made frequent trips to the United States and Canada.  He was one of only a handful of Puerto Ricans who found success off the island and after marrying a Edmontonian, Ayala was able to move freely between the two countries, which afforded him a luxury few Puerto Ricans gained.  By standards amongst Puerto Ricans, Ayala was an impressive man with broad shoulders, thick chest and big arms and he made an excellent powerful babyface to battle foreign stars like Ric Flair and the Iron Sheik.  When turned heel on Carlos Colon, Ayala had some great heat just as being a “traitor,” but he used a new hold, a reverse figure-four (a sort of Bizarro version of Colon’s signature hold), to injure Colon, he took up with Chicky Starr and he even manhandled Colon’s wife at an event.  It made for a tremendously intense affair that included the Universal title, barbed wire and fire leading to Colon running Ayala out of town.  The end of that run led to an unexpected turn of events when Ayala along with Hugo Savinovich, Chicky Starr and some key young talent left to create the AWF.  While the move led to some stagnation in the WWC, they held strong and the AWF eventually fell apart.  Hercules Ayala had a short run a couple short runs with the WWC, but ultimately returned to Canada to a regular life.
