A History of Transport in Wirral

From the ferries which began in the 13th century, through Great Britain’s first successful street railway and the first sub-aqueous railway tunnel this side of the Atlantic Ocean, photographs illustrate over a century of public transport.

Victorian Transport

The development of railways and tramways during a time when Great Britain led the world. Following transport mainly in Wirral and Liverpool, it includes the world’s first elevated electric railway – the Liverpool Overhead Railway.

Under, Over and Up

The engineering surveyors Charles and Douglas Fox are the link between three contrasting railways – the Mersey Railway of 1886, the Liverpool Overhead Railway of 1893 and the Snowdon Mountain Railway of 1896.

Queensway

When opened in 1934 the Mersey Tunnel was the longest subaqueous road tunnel in the world. Although connecting Lancashire with Cheshire its toll divides any idea of a united county. Even in the 21st century this magnificent feat of engineering is awe-inspiring.

As We Were I

Photographs, many from private sources and therefore not publicly shown elsewhere, of Wirral and Central Liverpool from the 1870s to the 1960s.

As We Were II

Another look at the past of which so little remains in Wirral and Liverpool including theatres and cinemas.

As We Were III

More photographs of Wirral and Liverpool including the deliberate removal of Victorian influence in the area.

As We Were IV

Yet more nostalgia including true colour photographs of Liverpool in the 1930s.

As We Were V

Although the area is the same the photographs are not – in this presentation is seen Liverpool Zoo.

As We Were VI

The destruction of our past continues. More memories of Wirral and Liverpool.

Wirral – Before It’s Too Late

Some of the changes which have taken place within Wirral over the last century, with attention to things we all tend not to notice. See things today, tomorrow might be too late!

Birkenhead

Wirral’s largest township and the changes which have altered its character.

Birkenhead II

See it as it looks today, but what was there previously? How good is your memory? Surprises and nostalgia are guaranteed.

Price’s Village

Third oldest industrial village in Britain, pre-dating Port Sunlight by over 34 years. Built on the bank of the Mersey, Bromborough Pool has suffered at the hands of those who ‘owned’ the village.

One Side of a Peninsula

The eastern shore of Wirral from Stanlow to New Brighton and a sail on the Mersey.

Quiet Corners

Not all within Wirral but everywhere can be reached by car within 45 minutes of anywhere in the peninsula.

‘Twixt Mersey and Dee

Simply photographs of Wirral’s villages and countryside past and present.

The Beauty of Snowdonia

Starting with a brief history of North Wales’ violent past and its gradual development into the tourist area of today, see some of Great Britain’s scenery without the effort of putting on walking boots.

Return to Snowdonia

Llandudno’s Great Orme Tramway; the Ffestiniog Railway; the Snowden Mountain Railway – all leading to superb views of and from the mountains.

Wild Snowdonia

Landscapes, cloudscapes, waterfalls. Photographs taken in all seasons show parts rarely visited as well as more accessible areas.

Thro’ My Lens

A pot pourri of slides including Hilbre Island, the Lake District and Amsterdam.

A Yugoslav Holiday

Walking in Macedonia near the Greek and Albanian borders and a visit to Dubrovnik.

Paradise Revisited

Dubrovnik, Pearl of the Adriatic, and Mostar and the Turkish Bridge.

Tenerife

Canary island of eternal spring and El Teide, Spain’s highest mountain.

Off-Season Costa

Costa del Sol in November and February with visits to Gibralter and Tangier.

Ephemera

Postcards; newspapers; magazines; tickets – an insight into our lives over the past 100+ years.

Ephemera II

More items which are usually discarded after use. There is a Society for collectors of this interesting material!

And What Did You Collect?

In these days when few children have real hobbies you can be reminded of things we did when young and, thereby, educated ourselves.

From a Great Height

Views of Wirral and Liverpool from tall buildings and aircraft to present a different aspect to our area.

Old Liverpool I

A spire on St Nicholas’ Church? Shaw’s Brow? Photographs of the one-time second city in the empire before the attentions of The Luftwaffe and city planners.

Old Liverpool II

Central Liverpool, the part which should be ‘recognisable’ to all although much of that seen no longer exists.

Borough of Bebington

What, in 1937, became one borough covered Wirral from the boundary of Hooton to that of Rock Ferry and inland therefrom.

The Commercial Joy of Christmas

What have glass eyes; prosthetic limbs and Bile Beans to do with the time that a great prophet (profit?) shall come throughout the land to overindulge the kids. A not-too-serious look at the time when credit card debt soars.

One Small Step

Scott; Shackleton; Mallory; Irvine; Yeager; Armstrong – REAL heroes.

The Big Ditch

A cruise up the Manchester Ship Canal and some of its history.
