Kids Club

SATURDAY - meeting in front of Pinemarten Café @ Nevis Range - 10AM

NB children must be confident riding, for example, the GREEN ‘Cat’s Eyes’ Trail – please chat to one of the organisers if you aren’t sure of your child’s ability or would like one of our information sheets

The Saturday kids group is run by volunteers who give up their time to organise rides for junior members of the wheelers. The £2 payment per week is not for paying the ride leaders, they are giving their time for free, but for paying for use of uplift and various bits and bobs required for running the sessions such as replacement inner tubes in case of puncture, first aid kits and occasional warm drinks. We expect the parents/ guardians of children participating in the rides to get involved in helping with the group. It can’t function without your support!! We have set out below some key things you can expect from us, and some of the key things we expect from you. If you wish to discuss anything regarding the rides please do get in touch.

What you can expect from the majority of adults facilitating the sessions:-

We have been screened by Scottish Cycling through the PVG / disclosure scheme.

We have attended first aid courses to enable us to provide the best possible management of any first aid incidents whilst out riding.

We have attended child protection training and positive coaching training.

We are continuing to develop our leadership and coaching skills through the support of an ‘Awards For All’ grant and other funding.

At the start of sessions we will check that children’s bikes are appropriate for the session and in good working order.

What we expect from the parents/ guardians

Parents/ guardians remain responsible for their children and must be contactable and able to collect their child during a session if necessary.

Parents/ guardians to be involved with the group either by riding with the groups (there are rides for a variety of abilities and we always welcome parents/ guardians to come along and join us.) or by assisting in non-riding capacities. We need people to keep a register of attendees, take payments, be available at the start/ finish of a ride as a contact point etc. Please chat to us about how you can help (it doesn’t have to be every week!)

Parents/ guardians ensure that their child is adequately clothed, has a cycle helmet less than 3 years old, long fingered  gloves and an appropriate bike for the trails being ridden, which is maintained and in good working order. We also recommend that children wear glasses or goggles to protect their eyes from tree branches/ mud etc. Advice is available on suitability of bikes and bikes are available for hire at a minimal cost if children do not have an appropriate bike.

All participants must be members of West Highland Wheelers and parents/ guardians must have completed a parental consent form and informed key organisers of any medical conditions/ allergies that their child has. This information will only be shared on a “need to know” basis (where it would be detrimental to your child’s safety if the information was not known).
